the reason the romans used it so much was because it took days for people to die. But jesus only spent a few hours up there (fortunatley for him, as it isn't a pleasent death)

the beating may have been a factor i suppose, but i think that it was common for the condemned to be so brutally treated, especially for those who were enemies of the state.

Your right it did take a long time to die when crucified, this was one of the reasons they stopped using it in the coliseums, it became tedious to watch.
The nails in the wrists my well have torn or punctured an artery or 2, also the sheer impact on the heart would be quite stressful.
However certainly one of the gospels tells us that he was stabbed in the side by one of the centurions. This could have hastened the process
of death by the nature of the bleeding.
I not sure that is a standard time of expectancy for the death in this manner, which is why it was so fearful, but presumably the stronger you were physically, or the more you tried to resist, the more the agony prevailed.
It was a fairly common practise for the time so there must be other journals and studies made of crucifixion, the Romans were good at documentation.
Still 24hrs is still pretty torturous by any ones standards, wouldn't you think?

OK First let me put the scripture here to show that Jesus died first before the spear was plunged into his side. They also did not break his legs because that was done to speed up the crucifixion process and he was already dead.

John 19: 28 - 37

28Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken,"[b] 37and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced."[c]

NOW it has been medical proven that the only way Water could be produced from a muscle (ie: the heart) is if it is torn, so putting the two together it is concluded that Jesus actually died of a broken heart (his grief and love for man kind). He grieved to death on the cross for humanities sins.

It was considered sacrilege to leave the dying hanging on the cross over the Sabbath, so the Romans would brake the legs of the condemned so that when the took them down (only to put them back up after Sabbath) they couldn't get away. Even with the legs broken they would still have lived well into the Sabbath.
Jesus gave up his own spirit, he surrendered his life of his own accord he was dead before the spear was stuck in his side. You could say he died of a broken heart.
Also the thief never died on that day, he had had his legs broken, which poses other Q,s which I wont go into here.

157. And their saying: Surely we have killed the Messiah, Isa son of Marium, the apostle of Allah; and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so (like Isa) and most surely those who differ therein are only in a doubt about it; they have no knowledge respecting it, but only follow a conjecture, and they killed him not for sure.

[Edited for content]
The first is the centurion's SPEAR being driven deep into the body of Jesus. It is recorded that after the spear was pulled out, blood and water poured from His body. Researchers will validate that the kidney, lung and heart membranes would have been fatally damaged during such a maneuver. If Jesus had only passed out due to the mixture of purported "sedative on a sponge"... the spear through His side would have assured without any doubt that all which remained was a fleshly body and nothing more.

The second is the fact that Jesus had been beaten and flogged to within inches of His life before He even got to the cross to begin with. Remember, He angered even the Jewish priests of His day for BLASPHEMY in calling Himself the "Son of God" or "Messiah". This was something that they so bitterly opposed that they didn't care if He ever made it to the cross!

Third is the fact that what the Disciples witnessed was so life-changing that they became martyrs for their belief in their Savior. If Yahshuah remained alive here on Earth, surely they would have wanted to stay here on Earth to be with Him. Instead, they chose death. The reason of why is quite simple... and that is because Yahshuah the Messiach wasn't HERE, He was (and is) where He told them He would be - and that it isn't any place a "mortal man can go".
Therefore, Yahshuah (Jesus) the Christ is the Son of God. I stake my life on it!

Respectfully Yours,

Brother Kurt Schanaman

It was a put-up job, if you'll forgive the pun. They crucified him on a Friday, knowing that they would have to take him down before Saturday (the Sabbath) to accord with Jewish law. The fact is he didn't die at all, and the christian myth is shown to be utter foolishness once again.

The blood loss from the beating and the spikes in his feet and hands (wrists)--also we can't discount the crown of thorns that were huge and dug into his head. A head wound bleeds tremendous amounts too.It was a miracle he had any blood left in him at all when they plunged the spear in his side but he had already died and the spear was to make sure.

No one had the power to take the life of Jesus, for two very good reasons.

1) He is a sinless man, and not liable to die, as death is the penalty for sin.

2) He is God, and no one had the right to take the life of the only begotten son of God.

Jesus died at the precise moment that his Father determined that he should die. No sooner. No later.

Jesus died before the other two crucified with him because of the scourging beforehand and having carried his cross. Death by crucifixion is death by asphyxiation. When the person no longer has the strength to push up on his feet or pull up on his arms, he cannot breathe. That is why they usually broke the legs to hurry it up.
The spear in his side did not kill him. It was to verify that he was already dead.

You need blood in order to stay alive.

If you had large chunks of your skin ripped off, holes in your wrists and ankles, etc - being suspended in the position they were subjected to, it is not difficult to accept that you could go into deep shock and die quite quickly.
