I can't give you an exact figure, but your best bet is to figure in your airfare first. Then add up what your monthly bills are here, how much it costs to put up a security deposit and a months rent where you live and then multiply it by about 2.5 because our money isn't worth as much in the UK, plus everything over there is more expensive! Then, make sure you have a chunk of cash put back for emergency money, furniture, etc.
I am looking at taking my family and moving to Europe and for us, I need about $20,000. That will pay the immigration fees, our airfare, first months rent, security deposit, one month of our bills, to get some cheap furniture and have about 1000 for savings.
Best of luck to you.

Did you say in the Next 6 years ?

Don't you think it's going to be the wrong answer whatever we tell you ?

The thing is that currencies are not stable, Petrol is not stable, not to mention that Bolton may no longer be your destination in 6 years either ...

Your best bet is move light, sell all and fly out. This way you only have to save for the airline tickets.

Are you going to buy a house when you get here ? that's roughly about $300,000 to start with at the current rates.

I guess you get my point.

Why would any sane person leave the US and move to Bolton?

It depends on what you would wish to bring over, might be easier to sell up and buy new when you arrive here.
