It sounds like he's put outside by himself when you leave the house......almost like punishment. Why not make outside comfortable & fun -- when you're home? Maybe you could spend more time with him outside in the yard so it becomes a good place to be? Or how about giving him a special "treat" or favorite toy when you leave (I use the Merrick Flossie chewy). My brother has a 2+ yr rat terrier & they are very loving loyal dogs but they like to be with their humans. He takes it most places, but when he can't he leaves him inside w/a slider door open so the dog can go out. I have two small dogs & we leave them inside when we leave home. I use to give my 1st dog a flossie because she was home alone, but since I have a 2nd dog, I leave the two of them together in the house with them blocked in the kitchen/laundry area. The crate idea is a good one also but if he's not use to it, you need to make it fun or worth while with a special treat or toy.

Be outside with the dog. Play with it, watch it explore and best of all get a doggy door so the dog knows it can come and go at will. The dog has to want to be outside. Play ball with it only outside, encourage it to chase butterflies. I think you are putting the dog outside to avoid behavior problems when you run to the store, right? You need to train this dog. Enroll in a good obedience class and learn about dog behavior and how to teach your dog. I love rat terriers, they are great energetic dogs, very intelligent, and loving. If you train your dog you will have a much better pet and a safer one.
I have miniature dachshunds and they are lap dogs and indoor dogs. But they love to be outside in their fenced in backyard with a doggy door that is never closed. They chase lizards, bark at the squirrels, scare the birds, always on the lookout for a cat and just enjoy sunning. They will lay outside in 100 degree plus weather and when they come in I need pot holders to pet them. And when they come back in the jump up on my lap, walk up my chest, give a few kisses, get some ear scratchs and "oh you are such a good dog", then curl up on my lap.

She may not keep external on her possess considering that she is an smart creature with a powerful feel of self-upkeep. Anything would be in the market and I'm certain she will be able to odor each and every animal that has long gone beyond the again door. Coyotes are identified to are living very good in so much towns (with a constant provide of cats and small puppies). Raccoons and oppossums will shred a small puppy in seconds. And puppies which can be allow out on their possess will band into middle of the night packs and assault different puppies and farm animals. Stay along with your little puppy for her security or construct a well, powerful fence.

Why put him outside? That's can be rather inhumane, especially if it's summer or winter. Not to mention the fact that he can escape. Why not buy a crate and crate him when you're gone? Dogs think of crates like their den. Just get a crate and a bed and voila! Your dog has a safe, comfortable place to stay while you're gone. That way he's not tearing up the house, yet he has the convenience of being out of the weather and there is no chance of him getting out of the yard.

Would the sky fall in if you kept the dog in the house? The dog is in love with you and can't be without you. That in itself is the highest complement an animal can pay you. Left outside, anything can happen to that little guy. Another dog can come along and attack it. Children can be cruel. I know a woman who kept her dog outside. One day, while she was at work, some of the neighborhood kids got in her yard and literally beat her dog to death with a pipe and baseball bat. The dog can be poisoned. Need I go on? The dog is probably fearful of being left outside. Dogs are pack animals. When you leave them outside, it's as if you are punishing them or worse yet, you are ostracizing them and that is the worst thing to do to any animal. Shame on you.

Nope lap dogs are just that. They need to be inside. If you must crate him when you have to go out, but leaving him outside is putting him at great risk especially from other animals who may get into your yard or him escaping. Leave him inside where he will be safe and sound.

some dogs don't do well in the heat. and i can almost guarentee wherever you are it is hot out..get a crate for him and keep him inside..i don't think rat terriers are really the out door kinda dogs..probably more companion dogs and he wants to be with you, not by himself outside..you really shouldn't want to discipline him for not liking to go outside..he might like it better if you go out with him..

Lap dogs are inside dogs. Crate him if you don't want him loose inside. Sounds like he is not used to being outside anyway. He wants to be with his "pack", and that's you.
