I would NEVER give out my bank account number to a merchant. Too much chance for the information to get into the wrong hands. I only use charge cards because they have protections set up and can't drain your bank account.

My personal opinion? Although I'm sure it is pretty reliable - but even it were 99.999% reliable would you want to be the 0.001% that it happened to?

I wouldn't give my bank account number without good reason. A credit card number is much safer. Is far as I understand, there are few reasons a company would need a bank account number if you are just purchasing something. To paraphrase a t-shirt I have seen: Be careful, be very cardful.

Only to a brand name store. Amazon, Best Buy, etc. Or smaller regional places that have a brick and mortar store somewhere. With them the odds of theft are almost zero.

They are very safe. Purchasing for years without problem.
