Dry dog food is MUCH better for your puppy's teeth, and if you are giving him a dry puppy kibble like he should have, he will be able to eat it just fine. You can certainly soak it for treat purposes, or purchase one of the many different treat products available in the pet food isle of your grocery store or pet store. Just find one he likes and use that for rewards or training! But - ABSOLUTELY - you can soak his kibble in water to use as treats! If he likes it, you have just found an inexpensive treat to use for training! That's very cool!

I wouldn't feed your puppy soaked food unless he really needs it. In large breed dogs (great danes, st.bernards etc) its recomended to soak the food because kibble expands and can cause gastric problems. How old is the puppy? I would hope he is over 10 weeks old if you just got him. In that case, he should eat fine. If he is under 8 weeks old then thats a problem, you may want to soak the food so its easier to eat. Make sure you drain the water out completly though because you can cause "Bloat" (stomach twists, fatal) if they eat/drink at the same time. I would use little bits of hot dog or cheese. They love it more then dog treats. Anything that not too large or crunchy. I would try soft treats, as they go down quick and they don't get full as often. Dogs do indeed need to eat hard food to keep their teeth clean.

I feed fresh cooked liver as treats, they love it, it is healthy, it is cheap. Use beef or lamb liver. I use lamb when I can get it because it has a higher B12 value but beef is also good.

You can soak the kibble but it shouldn't be left out after the soaking. Many breeders do this to transition the dog to solid food. It is best to feed dry kibble if you are going to feed commercial food, it will help their teeth.

I would recommend using a bone for recreational chewing. You should also have a favorite toy that is used for rewarding in training.

One last thing any treat you choose for training should be small, only large enough to give them a taste. Nothing they need to chew or will stick to their mouth. You want the dog to be constantly looking to you for more reward not focusing on the cookies for a few minutes. Save peanut butter for a kong when you leave them.

Yes, you can soak his kibble in water. Lots of breeders do this with their pups that they just weaned off of mom. There is nothing wrong with that. Or feed him wet food with some kibble mixed in. Be sure to get "small bites" kibble - it's easier for them to eat.

I get a bag of Pup-peroni and cut it up into very small chunks for training treats - it's inexpensive and my dogs love it. Or go to PetSmart and ask about their Natural Choice Training Treats (a PetSmart exclusive). They're really small and inexpensive, too!

I put a little water on my dogs hard food to make kind of a gravy. They love it. it is not "soaked' to the point it is soft, though. They drink up the juice created by the water, then eat the food. It is not soft since they eat it all within 30-60 seconds of it hitting their bowl.

I use little peices of baby carrots for training or once in a while Zukes Mini Natural treats. The kibble is much better if given dry. It helps to clean their teeth.

A cheap and effective treat is a small bit of peanut butter on a bit of bread. You can use soft white bread and make small balls out of the mix, works like a charm! Promise!

Down side is they "lick" a lot, because the peanut butter is sticky, as you know.
