The easiest entry point to motorsports would be go karts. It's an easy way to get seat time without costs getting too high (people inside motorsports tend to look at go-karting with a "I can't beleive how cheap that is" response, while people outside may find it expensive). When you get on track in go karts, pay ALOT of attention to the faster drivers. Talk to them when you can off track to find out why they are doing certain things (most are more than happy to share), and when on track, try to follow them and learn the lines they take. Get out and kart as often as possible, for as long as you can at one time. Seat time is the most important part of improving your skill. As an aid to that though, check the local bookstore for Skip Barber's "Going Faster."

Another good entry point, and one which would be a good development point for rally, would be Autocross. Autocross is fairly accessible and safe form of solo-racing. As the course will be different at each event, success depends on a driver being able to quickly learn and maximize their driving (a skill which could help in rallying). Aside from that, it is also less expensive and a good way to develop car control.

From here you may want to pursue Open Track events for some open lapping at race tracks or pursue a racing license for some wheel to wheel experience (which could open a lot of possible paths). But if you want to pursue rallying, the next main step would be rally cross. Any and all of these though would add useful and valuable skills.

At this point you will be involved in racing and probably having alot of fun! Going further ultimately requires greater investment of your time and money. Though if you have enough skill and show the potential, you may be lucky and get someone else's money to help keep the costs down... and if you can keep moving up and being successful, then you could be one of the rare people that can make a living driving a racecar.

But to start, look at the options available and what you can budget, and learn what you can about performance driving (it is only vaguely similar to the kind of driving you experience on the street).
