We have a 3 month old blue heeler. We love her to pieces, but she is so hyper! She sleeps in her kennel at night, but during the day she's out running around our property (we have several acres) and playing with our kids. She absolutely attacks our 2 year old when she sees him (playfully, of course). She just jumps up on him and licks him till he falls down. I know she's still young and I hope she will calm down as she gets older, But does anyone have any advice on what would be good for her to help her be calmer and still happy? Her mama is a great dog and she has never been hyper like this. Thank you everyone for your suggestions!

I had a blue heeler. She was very sweet. They are herding dogs so they are extremely hyper. They enjoy working. I don't know what you are willing to do, but I would do some agility training with her. If you have sheep, goats, or cattle train her to do what she is bred to do "herd". This will make her active mind and body work. Our blue heeler did finally slow down, but it was due to old age.

Completly normal. They calm down, 3 months is so young and they're all like that! you'll start to see she's a bit calmer at 4 months. But get her trained and do some basic obedience with her every day. i.e. sit and come.

Do not take her on a long walk as someone who claims to be a "dog expert" suggested!! At 3 months old she hasnt had all her vaccination shots and she could pick up something dreadful! They are very vunerable at that stage. Don't take her outside your property until she has had all her shots. Apart from that, she will not know how to walk on a lead yet. She shouldn't be allowed get too much excersise as it can damage her developing bones, so you'll just have to bear with her energy for a while.

Good luck with her!

You are right that she will be calmer as she ages. But for now, this is a way to get her calm.. Take her on a long walk, and tire her out so when you get home, she wont be hyper. All her energy would be gone from the long walk. And try to make run so her energy will go down quicker. so yea when ever shes hyper, get her tired out by long walks or just play, and she will be too tired to play. yea... good luck!!

excersize for an hour with her.....let her run on the tredmill if you have one....then you bring the kids out and if she still gets hyper around them.....you put her into a submissive position (gently but firm)....like on her side or laying down....and let her know that that is not the kind of behavior you accept.....give her treats for when she is calm to let her know that that is the behavior you do want her to express......I got this method from the Dog Whisperer and it really works........he's really good at what he does.....

you can't stop her from being hyper. you might have to get her fix for the hyperness to stop.
