I found a can of mackerel at the local grocery store and Pi was wondering if this made good bait, I'm going to use it in saltwater, possibly for some catfish too,
so here's what I'm thinking, if I put it in a panty hose (same way you put chicken livers in one for catfish) and tied it to the hook, do you think I could land some fish?

Sounds like a great idea. If you put the canned mackerel in a panty hose, the mackerel flavor will seep out slowly. Also I've heard of using a small film canister and you punch small holes in it, then tie it on next to the sinker. That way it's used as a small chum pot to attract the fish.

Peter is right even if he did get a thumb down. there are different species of mackerel. some ARE smaller. perhaps you may be confused with a king mackerel of which l'm sure would have a size limit, with a jack mackerel which is doing good if it reaches 12". here in cali there are no mackerel size limits and they are in fact, an awesome bait.

You bet it will. Mackerel is expensive! Are you sure you don't want to look into eating it yourself?

I think it's worth a try.
Go ahead and go for it.
What have you got to lose if it doesn't work?
