Does anyone have any helpful hints or places that operate 24/7 in the rescuing of stray dogs? I was driving earlier, taking my exit from the interstate and noticed a dog on the side the road. I circled around to try to get him, but there was a fence that he could not get through and he ran the other way. I circled and circled and stopped a couple times to try to get him to bring it some place safe. Whenever I got near him, he ran away. He looked like he was hurt and very scared of people. I watched him for a while and tried luring him with food, but nothing. I went home and tried to call an Animal Control place to see if they had better ways, and they are open 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. I thought, what good is that, how do you expect to help animals with those hours?? I called local vets and no place was open. Does anyone know what someone can do to help save these scared, lost dogs? It made me very sad.

Sorry, but your best bet is animal control/ASPCA.
The other option is to get a few friends together to try to get him. I have done this in the past.
You would need a large crate to put him in and then take him to emergency vet care or care for him in a spare room/garage if he is not seriously injured until Monday.
You could try local rescue organizations, but be prepared to help out with the care, at least temporarily of this dog.
It would be nice if all animals had help 24/7 available, but the reality is that it is just not feasible. There are far more animals in trouble than resources to help.
Good luck, hope you find the poor dog.

I would love to help you but I don't know where you live. So my recommendation is to go to petfinder, type in your zip code and call the shelter that are close to you. You could also grabs some really nice treats like liver from the store and try to lure the dog to you slowly. It might take some time to get the dog to trust you. Make sure you have lots of treats and just throw them close to the dog.

Use the serch words; rescue, your city's name and dog. That shoulkd get you on the right track. Not that it will help. Everything is so under-funded that there won't be an available person for days. It pisses me off and you are right to be sad.

Contact some of the rescue groups in your area. They will often help an animal in need.

Arizona Humane Society and I think everyone is right. It stinks that no one is there for days. They need to be on lookout for stray dogs more often.

There should be an emergency number. If you tell them that the animal may be hurt, they usually respond quicker!
