Anything that that comes between You and God,You can"t live a Lifestyle that is contary to God"s written word, and have
fellowship with God, You will start to pray and here comes
something that the Holy Spirt has illumnated that You need to take care of;Hatred will stop the flow between You and God.
Ref. Father forgive my Sins or Tresspasses as I forgive Others;Meaning if you don"t deal with Hate It will destroy You.
To some one that is Anti-Semite Prayer can not happen until that Matter is taking Up.When the Holy Spirit Illuninated to me that Smokeless Tobacco had become a Sin to Me.I couldn"t Pray for one with a Cocaine Stronghold to be broken until I Laid my case before God; The great part is whatever the Holy Spirit illuminates,He gives the Power to break that Stronghold;

Sin: Literally, a missing of the mark, according to the Hebrew and Greek Bible texts. God himself sets the “mark” that his intelligent creatures are to reach. Missing that mark is sin, which is also unrighteousness, or lawlessness. (Rom. 3:23; 1 John 5:17; 3:4) Sin is anything not in harmony with God’s personality, standards, ways, and will, all of which are holy. It may involve wrong conduct, failure to do what should be done, ungodly speech, unclean thoughts, or desires or motives that are selfish. The Bible differentiates between inherited sin and willful sin, between an act of sin over which a person is repentant and the practice of sin.

In my opinion people sin more nowadays than ever in history. By not defining it, it is easy to feel quilt free. I don't think sinning is just breaking a commandment that would be too simplistic. And I am not going to quote the definition from the dictionary.

Sin is anything that takes you off the path towards God. One of the old words for sin was an archery term. Just as the archer must take into consideration of all the things that would cause him to miss the bull's eye ( wind velocity wind direction ,curvature of the earth ) the believer must look at and take into consideration those things that would keep him/her from hitting the target of being with God.

Basically we all want to be happy. So we do things which we believe that would bring happiness to us.
But if that happiness comes out of the suffering others, then the acts done to achieve that is indeed sin.
But that counts only when we are greedy or power crazy or when engulfed with other negative emotions like envy, pride, jealousy or hatred.
Hope this gives u a basic idea if not specific.

What is SIN - A moral category going beyond that of simple wrongdoing by its implications of evil, disobedience, depravity, stain, and wickedness. Sin therefore requires atonement, penitence, and self-abasement, not to mention punishment. The abjection and lack of self-respect implied in the cluster of ideas serve to emphasize the importance of redemption. They are therefore an important buttress to the power of those who claim to know how to provide it. The concept is only at home in a religious tradition built around the possibility of God's disgust, and is not found pure and simple in classical thought, where offences were equally liable to divine vengeance whether voluntary or not.-

There is nothing like SIN. Everything is pure as everything is creation of God. Yet there are classification as Satta, Rajasa and Tamasa. Out of thses three we should refrain from Tamasa first, and then by Rajasa.
Tamasa identified by delusion, and inactivity may be called SIN as it is an obstacle for both spiritual and material progress.
Rajasa identified by huge activites and lot of egoism may be called as SIN as it is an obstacle to spiritual development

Anything that takes you away from God Almighty is sin.
Anything that appears to be beautiful outwardly but is very ugly and devastating within is sin.

The secular definition means falling short of the target. The term is still used by those who practice archery.
Religious folk adopted the term to mean falling short of what God wants people to do.
