No, it cannot be transmitted from dog to dog, nor from dog to human.
Last year, at the annual vets association meeting, the cases of two men with heartworms were brought up for discussion. Two men, not related to each other, were murdered in Atlanta Georgia, the homicides were not related either. Autopsies in both bodies found them infested with heartworms. No one could explain these findings.
I've been keeping informed, and staying right on top of it, but no ulterior info have ever been given, except for that "someone is looking into it"........
As all you can imagine, I'm very interested in it, and am "dying" to find out more about it!

No. Heartworms are a canine specific parasite. They can't survive in humans.
You can catch colds and E. Coli from dogs, but not much else. Except that you are fair game for diseases that fleas and ticks on your dog may carry.
