I had a Basenji mix who barked a ton. But yes if u get a Basenji purebread they most likely will not bark. But this does not mean they wont make noise, in place of barking a basenji will whine or whimper. The reason they cant make a deep bark has something to do with their voice/throat w/e, but their barks sound really scratchy or whiny.

Wolves rarely bark and the same holds true for more primative dog breeds such as akitas, canaan dogs, huskies, and spitz breeds. Basenjis don't bark at all, however, they still vocalize. Greyhounds are known to be quiet and surprisingly many guarding breeds such as mastiffs aren't quick to bark either.
Other breeds such as chihuahuas, beagles, shelties, and collies are known for their barkiness.
It's also important to look at individual dogs as there are always dogs who never read their breed standard and don't quite fit what's normally expected of the breed.

Basenji don't bark, but they make a yodeling noise and are very talkative. Greyhounds don't bark often, although they can. And the breed description calls for Bullmastiffs to be silent guards and sneak up on intruders, although I don't know if they are actually as quiet as the description suggests.

There are two types, possibly more, but here are two breeds. The Shiba Inu Spitz. Doesn't bark; but shreiks! Its a non-sporting breed. Also, the Alaskan Malamute. They seldom bark.

- Basenji- It has the unique properties of not barking (it makes a low, liquid ululation instead)
- Kerry Blue Terrier- They rarely bark unnecessarily.
- German Shepherd- They only bark when it is necessary.
