To boost your chances of doing well for social and business reasons and as successful business now means you have to connect on a global basis, i would strongly recommend that the best approach for a quick start is to learn 100 essential phrases or more in Spanish and Mandarin, about to become the world's two most favorite languages, besides English.
Any language takes several years, even decades to master. It may not be practical to learn just one language unless you are doing limited business with just one company or country. Knowing two or more languages enable you to survive much better and you may just stand out as a popular multi-linguist whom business associates will respect. It usually takes 2-4 months to master the phrases. Millions of people around the world love to learn these two colorful languages which have a rich history and culture.Spoken mastery is not that difficult.
Socially you will benefit too. Talking from experience and having travelled to many countries i found that it was most important to be armed with knowledge of certain questions especially during emergency and shopping such as: 'Where is the toilet please?'
or 'Give me a cheaper price'. You can save lots of embarrassment by not using hand signs and also money!.
Same goes for critical words like:Help! Fire! Stop thief! Wait!
Cheers, bottoms up!
It is the trend nowadays to learn to speak a minimum of 3 languages if you desire to be a successful politician or businessman for better, all-round communication in this age of multi-racial societies.

For ease and quickness then you would be better off picking a romantic language like, French, or Italian. But if you are looking for a business vocabulary? Look to Mandarin, or Japanese.
It is said that once you learn a second language that a third one is more easier to learn, as well as the next language, because you find the rhythm, and patterns much more quicker.
Knowing that maybe you should pick another language after you have mastered the second one. I would suggest Mandarin. China has become a powerhouse in the economic forces.

I recommend to you to learn Spanish, is the second language in the world after the English. I also like Spanish because I'm Argentinian.
Spanish is not difficult , it just may be some hard to pronunciate some words, but is a beatiful language.
Sorry if I'm wrong in something. I'm not so good at English.
Saludos from Argentina the beautiful.

Spanish is the best thing to learn. It's relatively easy and is widely spoken throughout the world in alot of countries.
Italian is a romantic sounding language I think, German is very harsh sounding and I think hard to learn. French, well we don't like them and they don't like us...
So it's Spanish I'd say.

You just reversed your field with the second sentence.
The most useful language will depend on where you live.
If you were in Canada, I'd say French.
If you lived in the USA, I'd say Spanish.
Many US children are now taking immersion Mandarin.
That's probably the hardest one to learn.
German might be the easiest for English speakers.

I can tell you Spanish is quite easy and the second most important. There are 5 vowels like in English and only one sound for each one. The consonants have also one sound as well each one. Then the rest is easy. Good luck!!
