That varies from State to State, and in some places city to city. In Alaska, it is legal to carry concealled weapons with no permit, while in places like Washington, DC, hand guns are, for all intents and purposes, banned. Check with your local cops or sheriff's department about the law in your area.

The rules depend on what state you are in.
The Federal law states that you cannot be "under indictment for" or "been convicted in any court of, a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding 1 year", Nor can you be "a fugitive from justice". You cannot be "an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance" nor have "been adjudicated as a mental defective or been committed to a mental institution" {NOTE: Gun Control Advocates can't understand the 'adjudicated' or 'committed' requirements}. You cannot be "an alien who is illegally or unlawfully in the United States" or a person who has been "discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions".
Nor can you be "a person who, having been a citizen of the United States, has renounced such citizenship".

packing.org has all the information about concealed weapons permits. In many states you can carry open but that is not a good idea. It scares the liberals and the cops feel a need to "do something" about it.

Contact a gun store, or ATF. I do not know where you are located, or exactly what your question is. You do not need a license to purchase a firearm unless it is fully automatic.
