If you don't catch her in the act, then you shouldn't try to discipline her at all because she won't understand. However, if you do see her do it, then you may yell a little and show her how much it upsets her. When she goes outside and not inside, give her a treat. Don't hurt her, though.

First of all you should never, ever, hit your dog. This only causes the dog to be scared of you and is most likely the cause of the urination in the house. It is a way for a dog to show you that you are the boss and that they accept there position in the family. Hitting a dog, especially as a puppy, can cause many physical and emotional stress for your dog. There is no quick way to train a dog but you can train her at small intervals, like five minutes, at a time about once or twice a day. It may take a while but you will get it done faster if you praise and give the dog treats when they do the right thing. Dogs naturally want to please there owners, so the more you praise them for doing the right thing the more they will do it.
Here is a website to help you with your training problems.

Remember, NEVER HIT YOUR DOG, EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and how hard to hit your dog is to hit it at all.You are definantly not ready for a dog and if I could I would take that dog from you and find it a better home. You need SERIOUS help.

You don't say how old your dog is, but 9 hours is much too long a time for a dog (especially a puppy) to be in a crate without a break. A puppy's bladder isn't developed enough to wait that long! Regardless of the dog's age, someone needs to be letting the dog outside to do it's business during that time. Focus on giving LOTS of praise when your dog does the right thing. For teaching the dog other behaviors, such as sit, down, wait, etc., clicker training is wonderful. There's a lot of information available on the Internet, and most pet stores sell clickers. It's a great positive way to train your dog, and most dogs respond quite quickly. Look into an obedience class. Be patient, positive, and consistent.

I think there's NO truth to hitting or spanking the dog in ANY way. She's a PUPPY. You expect her to learn where to go to the bathroom and what not do when you're hitting her and not correcting her? There's NO need for you to hit your dog and I think your friend is completely wrong. Hitting an animal is abuse, and you can be taken to court for that if someone sees you, reports you, and has proof. You could even do some jail time. Do NOT hit her. She's not listening because you're not communicating. Hitting does get their attention, but it does NOT show them what they're doing wrong. She's learning that you're bad and she doesn't want to be near you because you hit her. If you work a lot and don't have a lot of time to train her, I suggest you find her a new home where someone will have time for her. Puppies are a lot of work and it sounds like you're not ready for the responsibility. Please do the right thing and give her to people who will not abuse her and show her what a good life is.
Edit: I don't think you're spending enough time with her and since she's a puppy, she needs that bond. She's peeing inside because you're not home to let her outside. It's not her fault you're not showing her what not to do.
Edit: Again, there's no need to hit her. Even a spank with a newspaper is "too hard" because you don't have to hit her. When she goes inside and you catch her in the act, clap your hands loudly, firmly say no, and take her outside to finish up.

I agree with many of the other answers here.
When my dog was a puppy, I had to make sure I was home every three to four hours or so to let her out. It was a pain, but that's how puppies are.
You said you don't have a lot of time to train her. You may be at a point in your life where you need a less demanding pet, like a cat. Cats are wonderfully affectionate (I have 2 now), but don't take a lot of work beyond food, water and cleaning out the litter box. Being a responsible dog owner takes time. Training (overall training, not potty training) isn't something you do once and then don't have to do it again. I waited many years to get a dog because I knew I didn't have the right situation for one.
It's not enough to want a dog. You have to be able to invest the time and effort into the care of one.
I don't hesitate to give my dog a correction. But that's different from hitting. Please, please, PLEASE do not ever hit your puppy again. You are only creating future problems for you or someone else.

It's all too hard! Puppies take patience and time and there are NO quick fixes! Hitting a dog makes it timid, unsure and afraid of life because they do not understand why you are hurting it. You will not get anywhere, it will only make it worse. If you REALLY have to ask how hard is TOO hard...then I think you already know the answer..you are hitting it too hard! The best behaved dogs have been raised with firmness (voice, body language), fairness (understanding it has an animals brain and therefor not much of a connecting ability), consistency and time. When you say you don't have the time to train your dog then I don't think it was probably the best idea to get one. Dogs are social animals. This is an animal that worships you...even if you do hurt it so that makes me very, very sad.

OK, listen up.
Your dog is misbehaving because she is terrified of you, she is bored, she is tired of being in a crate for 20 hours a day. How would you feel if this was your life?
You'd probably pee all over the place also.
Hitting is dog is not ok. Ever. There is no "right way" to hit a dog.
I bet if you start showing your dog more love, positive reinforcement, treats, play toys, time, attention, walking her, petting her, playing with her and stop yelling and hitting her behavior will improve.
Reward her good behavior and she will understand what you want. She is probably very frightened of you and that is part of why she is peeing.
You and your friend are both ignorant. If you don't have "time" to train and love a dog don't get one.

im not even going to read the other answers; but there is no good time, amount of force, or reason to hit a dog. ever. if someone saw you hit her, she could be taken away and you could get charges pressed. no lie!! now, best way to help your situation, if you can catch her going in the house, use a stern voice saying no! and say "outside" or "potty" or whatever term you want to use for her to associate going outside with. best to pick a one word phrase with one or 2 syllables. anyway, if you catch her, put her nose NEXT to the mess (not rub it in it) and tell her bad, then take her immediately outside. you may not be giving her enough time outside if you are saying she goes after you bring her in. try let her out for longer periods of time, and when she does go outside, offer her plenty of praise and a treat; she will soon catch on, but be prepared it takes time, and it will have some accidents, so dont get so mad when she has one.

You should seriously find another home for your dog, you do not have enough time for a dog......you crate her, then hit her to try to train her?...that is sooo wrong!....get a dog when you have the time to spend with them....you are becoming too frustrated to feel good about having her and treating her in a warm and caring way...they need love, not abuse !....please take her to a shelter where she can have the chance for a normal loving life...PLEASE...think of her !

First, get a no pull harness. which will supply up her straining and pulling on the top of the leash because of the fact it is uncomfortable below the palms in the event that they pull. next, exchange guidelines, some steps, and make your canines take a seat with it is back to something it is over reacting to. Repete till canines gets the thought that calm finding is wonderful, and barking lunging, circling on the lead etc, would not get them the reaction they decide for. Take treats mutually as walking , kitty kibble many times is exciting sufficient and elementary to hold, and supply tiny treats whilst they act calm or take a seat whilst advised. be advantageous your canines is getting a lot of psychological and actual exertion to maintain wholesome and mentally/emotionally balanced. perchance locate an agility direction and coach you ought to artwork with, or prepare your canines to seek for issues you conceal around the abode and backyard. delight on your little canines, sounds like a smart and keen one.

First thing you have to do with a dog is us the same dry food. Dry food is the best because it cleans there teeth and it is not full of water. Until house broke, the dog should only be feed once a day at the same time every day. Walk the dog after you feed it. And I mean walk do not just stand there. Then walk him again a half hour after that. You should walk him as many times a day as you can until house broke. Walking helps it pass the food. Walk it in the same place every day. When they smell there own potty it makes them have to go. When the dog goes in the house, clean it up with vinegar. This does 2 things kills the smell+vinegar has a urine bass smell and the dog thinks you r marking this as your turf. When the dog goes in the house put the potty outside where you want it to go. Remember smelling his potty makes him want to go. So no potty smell in the house but lots of potty smell outside. You should have a pin or create just big enough for him to lie down. Most dog will not potty where they lay. Do not put anything in the pin that will soak up pee. When you are not watching your dog, he should be in the pin. If he goes in the house, you should catch him in the act and grab him and yell no then take him outside. Clean it up and take the potty outside. So to rap this up. Walk him as much as you can tell him good boy when he goes outside. When your not watching him keep him it the pin. When he goes inside tell him bad boy and take him outside..
