An amplified subwoofer simply has an amplifier attached to the subwoofer. A non-amplified subwoofer does not.

Most amplified subwoofers are designed to be easy to add onto factory audio systems. Non-amplified subwoofers allow for more options, because you can use one, two, or more subwoofers with a single amplifier if you match them up correctly.

If the amplifier in your vehicle is already connected to speakers, then you probably need another amplifier for the sub. If you're talking about a factory amp, then it won't work for the subwoofer.
