ok there is no cure, its going to be with you the rest of your life, sorry for the bad news. but the good news is you can deal with it yourself. i have major depression myself and i do not take meds, and only took meds for six days and they made me super sleepy so i said forget it. i was diagnosed back in nov of 2005 and i am doing just fine. what you have to do is sit down and pick your brain (thats what a psychologist will do anyways) find out why you are depressed, what causes the depression to come on (like for me when i get really tired i start letting things get to me), how do you feel about yourself?? just really think about it and get to know yourself. do you have low self esteem, do you hate your life, do you regret things in life, etc. once you have actually gotten to the root of your depression, the cause of it, then you can start to fix it. and also dont hide it, tell family, freinds, coworkers, etc about it, the more you talk about it the more comfortable you will be with it and learn to live with it. have fun with it too, make jokes about it and one last thing, learn about it. if you ever need to talk, or want more of my story, just email me, i am here for you and will help you through where it wont control your life. good luck!!!

I see a shrink but don't take meds. They made me worse. My shrink helps me find new solutions for problems I think are unsolveable and resolve personal issues.

Often depression comes from a situation we can't cope with, then genes take over with depression. I mean anybody else might be in the same situation and just feel sad, but someone with the genes for depression gets depression.

If you can find a way to deal with depression on your own, finding solutions and working through what is making you unhappy, you can cure it. My depression is much less painful than a few years ago because I have worked hard to remove the self-injurious things from my life. I don't think it's ever cured or completely gone, but you can live a great life.

Vitamins can help or natural remedies.

Also if money is an issues, I'm sure they could help you through community mental health if you are american.

I agree with most of the advice given here.

Some people get major depression once in their lives, and it resolves on its own after awhile, with some support from friends and families.

Many times, that is not the case. There is some kind of brain abnormality that is still poorly understood. If that is you, you will have to take medication. (in my case, I have bipolar disorder, and the incredibly painful depressions are not even slightly reduced thru counseling and support from others. Not even one bit!!!!!)

Being depressed and not having treatment is thought to cause brain damage in itself, because neurogenesis, the creation of brain cells, stops. If you are a young person, and your depression persists, you may easily end up with poor grades, poor relationships, and miss many usual accomplishments/experiences in life. Other medical conditions you may have are made more severe by depression.

If you take pills for pain, what is wrong with taking pills for what is really some kind of brain damage/developmental type problem? Our society is still not treating depression/bipolar/schizophrenia as real medical conditions, but you will not be able to find a doc who thinks otherwise.

Good luck to you, I hope if you are really suffering, you will consider medication.

Aren't you kind of asking, "How can I cure diabetes without pills or insulin?" Major depression is a serious problem and I have seen it kill and destroy other lives in the process. I have recovered from major depression and, even being released from therapy now, I still have to take medication on a regular basis to prevent a relapse.

Depression and its treatment has two components: physical and mental. The physical component has to be treated with medication and the mental component has to be treated with therapy. You CANNOT think your way out of depression anymore that you can lower blood sugars without pills or insulin. You can be released from therapy and therapy can change the way you feel by changing the way you think, but you have to learn what those techniques are before you can apply them. You want to treat your depression without pills? Fine, take St. Johns Wort and follow a good diet, work out to release endorphins, and even balance your life. But for GOD's sake, take the first step and get the biological component of your depression controlled FIRST and learn how to change the way you feel by changing the way you think FIRST. But otherwise, you can't think your way out of a depression or you wouldn't be asking how you can cure major depression on the mental health side of Yahoo! Answers.

Major depressive disorder is a common mental health diagnosis, but not so common among teenagers as yourself. I am sure that whoever diagnosed you would have given some suggestions. I take medication and have been in therapy since I was 12. "Shrinks" aren't all that bad. Maybe you should speak with a parent or another adult who you trust.

Good luck and take care of you!

For the moment you can try by making a list of things you want to do like let's say hobbys of things you once found fun or just anything you'd like to do, try distracting your mind with watching movies, reading a book, excercise and take vitamins just make a routine for yourself besides we're weren't all born with depression it might as well drift away with time, wish you luck :)

You'll probably have to take medication.

I've taken medication for depression since about 1983. It's not a big deal.

Try exercising, taking St John's Wort (available at health food stores), meditating, etc. Many people have success with that.

But if it doesn't work, please at least talk to a therapist. And if THAT doesn't work, be open-minded about medication. I understand why you don't want to take drugs - they can really screw with you, and they aren't terribly effective. But for some people, they are a life-saver.

I believe that one has heal his/her ownself. There is a great book called "Feeling Good" by David D. Burns, M.D that goes into thinking patterns that typically are characteristic of those with some kind of a depression. If you believe that you can change you can.

meds can be good and there is nothing wrong with taking them.
Exercise can help. Run or jog several miles a day-- it will help.
There may be something in your life that you cannot deal with properly-- if you can eliminate it.
find someone to talk to that has similar interests as your own and share you idea's and feelings.
