i'm buying disc brakes later this week and i've narrowed it down to the avid BB7's or Juicy5's. i do trials, dirt jumping, and somewhat downhill, i have a hardtail and i weigh 160 pounds. should i go for the hydraulic ones or mechanical, cuz i've heard good things about both of them but that hydraulics have more stuff that could go wrong. can anyone help me out?

You cant go wrong with any of AVIDs brakes. The plus side of the BB7s is you can use your levers, and no worry about spilling fluid and nothing to bleed ever. But You do have to worry about is the cable breaking. They have made great improvements on hydro brakes so there is less to worry about than when they first put them on bikes. I would go for the juicy 5s sure stopping power all the time light weight and great performance. I ride a Cannondale hardtail with XT disc front and rear. And I just got a Cannondale Scalpel with XTR disc on mavic Crossmax wheels. Both bikes have Lefty front frorks.

BB7 are the best mech brakes, but hydros are better. At least, the Juicy 5 or 7. I think that the myth that hydros are subject to mid ride failure or such is not true anymore. The hydros correct the distance of the pads and the disc, where cable won't. Okay, on the BB7 it's easy to do it, but you have to do it.

Good luck with any of those.
