Believe it or not, but it's actually a sign of affection, mothers nip at their young to wake them in the mornings, and when they play fight with their litter kittens they do a lot of biting, my kitten bites me a lot, but it's not malicious and you shouldn't punish them for it because it's part of their way of showing you affection.
Hope that helps

My mother's cat does the same thing to her, and actually leaves some pretty serious bite marks! I think it's a dominance thing for the cat. He gets aggravated easily, and then tries to establish dominance and to tell her it's not what he wants at any particular point (whatever she's doing - like petting him or something).
That sounds like that's a possibility of what your cat might be doing.
Good luck!

One of my cats does the same thing, never really hard he just nips. He only ever does this when he knows I am awake but not getting up. I think he does to get some attention. He always sleeps in bed with me where his brother sleeps in his box in the front room. if his brother is up he plays with him and leaves me alone, but if his brother is still alseep he will do anything (once he knows I am awake) to get me up to play with him.
Maybe your cat is just feeling a bit lonely, 8 to 9 hours without your attention is a long time for a cat.

It could be either because it's hungry, or maybe it's just giving you a "love bite".
