no but most of the airport will ask you to hand in your backpack/rucksack to different place from all other passengers and i think is to stop your backpack/rucksack strings getting tangled into conveyor belt.

I've travelled for 20 years with a rucsack all over Europe. Whilst waiting to check-in:
1. Make sure that you have not got any valuables in your rucsack. Insurance won't cover cameras etc. in the hold.

2. Close all the zips and ties.

3. Pull the tightening straps on the shoulder straps as tight as pos and then tie the ends together.

4. If you have a hip strap, secure it backwards around the front of the bag tieing up or folding the end underneath itself.

5. Remove any old flight labels.

6. Don't have your name and address on the outside but do have it promonantly on the inside.

Hope this helps.- Dulcimer Codfish.

I work for an airline, and rucksacks are a pretty popular thing around here.

The airline will not make you wrap your bag. But be advised, no airline covers any damage sustained to the outside of the bag. This includes if the straps get caught up in the bag belt while it's being shipped. To aid you, ask the ticket counter agents if they have a large garbage bag to put your sack in. If they do, then you can slide it in to make sure the straps won't get caught.

If not, then make sure you tie all the loose straps together to prevent any snagging they may do. Believe me, if they get snagged onto something while in a bag room, it will rip the bag apart.

If it's you bag you are responsible for it, they will not provide you with anything to put it in. If you want it to arrive at the other end in one piece, I would pay for it to be wrapped at the airport it's worth it. (not all airports have that facility though)
