Considering that there is only one SMA in the entire Army, it would without question take 30+ years to get there. Many who do serve that long still never make it to that level.

More than 20 years and it is pretty hard as there is only ONE at a time. He is an E9 (highest enlisted rank) and is an advisor to the senior ranking Army officer. He is considered to be above all other enlisted people in the Army.

The guy/gal probably has a degree, possibly even a masters and was selected out of ALL the Sgt Majors in the Army for the job. But he still has to salute a baby butter bar.

You do know there's only one in the entire army right?? You'd be more likely to get commissioned and make general then become sergeant major of the army.

Many are called, few get the chance to answer.

There is always big competition for promotion amongst the senior Non-commissioned officers.
