Daniel Komen ran 7:58.61 in the 2 mile on July 19, 1997, so it's possible for an elite athlete.
It's tough to find comprehensive lists for the 2 mile since it's not run often. But for a close distance, the 3000m, the top 50 or so best times in the world this year (2007) ranges from about 7:33 to 7:49. Doing a straight pace conversion, that's like 8:06 to 8:24 for the 2 mile.
Maybe the person who wrote to you was exaggerating, unless they're one of the top 50 middle distance runners in the world, and even then they wouldn't have run 8 minutes exactly.

It's possible, if you're Daniel Komen
"Daniel Komen of Kenya holds the world 2-mile record of 7:58.61, set in 1997, which is two sub-4 minute miles back-to-back."

I don't think anyone has ever done that. It is a HUGE feat to run a 4 minute mile ... back to back 4 minute miles would be unbelievable. Someday maybe someone will, but it would be an incredible accomplishment.

The American record is 8:11. I couldn't find the two-mile world record, but I would guess that your e-mail pal had better be from Kenya or he's joking with you.

You could be the first if you can do that. Start by going half that distance in half that time. When you have that part done, keep increasing the distance.
I think almost everyone will bet against you achieving that.
