In a word - Adrenalin. When you're stressed out, frightened, worried, upset, whatever your adrenalin will kick in. I'm told this helps you get through the moment, and cope with whatever crisis is at hand. Once your adrenalin levels start to fall, however, you feel like you've been hit by the proverbial adrenalin bus. Personally, I always feel tired and wiped out after stuff, but I gather reactions can differ.

If your definition of an emotionally draining day doesn't occur all that often, and comes about as the result of a crisis, I wouldn't worry about it. However, if you find that it's happening on a regular basis you might want to consider talking to someone.

Good Luck!

Just a day??? Shift workers are known for sleeping +16 hours due to stress and shift change. Especially when they have been burning the candle at both ends.
