This Florida mother (I cringe with shame) wants to ban 80 books from her son's high school's library, mostly about homosexuality, abortion, and atheism.

"Lopez admits she hasn't read a single one of the objectionable books cover-to-cover.

"In her appeal, she quotes scripture and blames the Columbine school s, , bullies, teenage pregnancy and other ills on what she considers the removal of God from schools.

She targets literary genres ranging from reference books to short stories...."

Want the cherry on top? Her own son's an atheist.

"My oldest son doesn't believe in God," she said. "I guess he kind of thinks I'm stupid."

Anyone think book-banning's gonna change that boy's mind?

No not at all. Just make him be more disgusted with his mother and in all honesty, does she not think he can get the books else where?

there is more than one library in the world. and the internet.

its sad. she is ignorant enough to say that without ever reading the books period. Close mindedness should be a crime. poor kid. too bad we cant pick our parents huh?

book banning is a terrible idea. It is far worse than parental control. It is an attempt at taking away people right to Intellectual Freedom.

I high suggest looking at the following website

www.ala.org

ALA stands for American Library Association.

Banning booking is just the same as burning books and YES people still do that in the 20th century.

People like that mother in Florida would be very happy turning society just like in the novel Fahrenheit 451

http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bookburning/bookburning.htm

Further more Divine Command theory as she claims is not going to make society better.

Edit: emmapeel66 sorry dear you are mistaken. there is a HUGE difference between self censorship and what she is doing. She is trying to ban books from being read by anyone and that it a dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Those who want to burn, or merely ban, books only wish to close the minds of their children from thoughts not aligned with their own. It's regretable that in this day and age we have such thoughts of 'removing' words that evoke these kind of actions. Once unleashed, words can never be put back into darkness...even between the covers of something as 'innocent' as a book!

Some people are so fearful, they can't even figure out what to be afraid of.

I think bood banning is a totally paranoid reaction by people who are so scared they want to control everything and everyone around them. This is all they can think of doing but it won't help them and certainly won't help anyone else. In the end, this type of action is just a danger to all.

Yet another example of religious sheeple that have given up their rights to use their own brain. Lets keep everyone looking out the same ignorant eyes. What is really appalling is that she is happy having kids that cannot think or act on their own. Basically she bred a generation of mindless igrnorant zombies. Again, lets not take responsibility for the kids I have brought in this world. Let someone else raise them. It is really sickening.

Interesting question. I don't understand book banning at all. Even as far as the librarians themselves deciding what donated books should be kept. I think if it is donated to the public library, it should be kept in the public library.

She is hyper-reacting, as people tend to do.

I think that what she's doing is only going to push her atheist son farther away from her in terms of beliefs.

Book-banning is never a good answer. Never.

No, it won't. I don't see why people can't practice self-censorship. If you don't like it or agree with it, don't read it. However, let me read it if I want to. Also, trying to have a book banned is just going to get more kids to read it which is what I'm sure she doesn't want. I think she's just trying to use the ban to parent for her. Censorship is just wrong.

It is only a baby step from book banning to book burning.

I agree that this mother is over the top. She needs to address these issues at home.

I wonder, though, do you ahve the same outrage about the Bible being banned from public schools.
