Any ideas about making the dog leave the kittens alone. I don't care but it sure hurt my wife's feelings. I need to do something. I tied up the dog but its hot here and that is not a permenant solution. There are too many kittens and no place to take them. I live on a ranch. I thought about putting something on the kittens's fur that makes them undesirable for the dog. Vicks keeps the other dog from trying to mate with the bigger cats.

Lots of input. The dog was dropped here 3 weeks ago by some considerate town dweller. I paid $67 to have it nuetered and will pay more for a series of shots next week. It is a black lab puppy. Small dogs will attempt to breed anything at all and it hurts the cat's feelings. The cat lover is a fox terrior male. The dogs and cats are fed twice a day and have food out most all times. The dog never touched a kitten in 3 weeks then ate one. The cats all arrive courtesy of town dwellers dumping them. I cannot afford to nueter everybodies cat and all their kittens. Only some get rabies shots. They are lucky I feed them. I have four choices. 1. I give away what I can. (I do) 2. I can take them to the pound in town and let them kill them. ( I have) 3. I can kill them. ( I have ) 4. I can feed them and let them live. Which is what is happening with the kittens and the dog that ate one. Any more ideas.

Living on a ranch you know that if you got a chicken killer you have kill it. The same with a cat killer. Once the get the taste for blood there is nothing left to do.

I can see both sides & I wouldn't shoot your dog. To me he is far more important on a ranch than 'a whole bunch of cats'. Your wife is just going to have to acept it, it is ranch life.

Tom cats also kill litters of kittens they didn't father. You wife is just going to have get some tough skin & not allow this sort of thing to upset her so.

Besides with that many cats you can't get them ALL fixed. There is just too many. Looking back in history how many a farmer or rancher didn't drown litters of kitten in a gunny sack in the nearest ditch. That was how they used to keep cats to a miminum. Today that is not ethical so you never hear about it happening.

If it comes to a fight, LOL, I am on your side.

Have you seen dog whisperer? You need to show him, in a touch and shhhh manner, that your the leader. Bring a kitten out, if he goes to it touch and make the noise. Let him know that the cat is yours and he cant even go near or look at it without your ok.

Your dog has a high prey drive. Put the kittens where he can't get them. Maybe you could feed him better.

I think maybe you should muzzle the dog and then some correction techniques need to be done may I suggest and obdience class for you and the dog . He needs to learn his limits and you need to know how to teach him .good luck .

I will tell how to solve this problem...Get your pets spayed and neutered, then your dog wont have a hunger for poor little kitties. No, wonder....
