Couple of things: 1) you make an interesting point. I don't know for sure why people say "Jewish Rabbi" instead of just "Rabbi"; it might be because "Rabbi" is not as common a term as "priest" or "pastor", etc. Thus perhaps the added adjective comes from a previous generation.
2) "Messianic Jews" are considered Jewish only by themselves. No other Jewish group considers them to be Jewish. You cannot believe in Jesus as the messiah and also be Jewish. Period. We are the only ones who get to define who we are.

LOL- I mentioned this to my friend once.
She had said for the millionth time a Jewish Rabbi.
I said as opposed to a Catholic, Muslim or Buddhist Rabbi.
She said don't be silly all Rabbis are Jewish. I replied exactly.
She has never said Jewish Rabbi to me since.

I actually agree with your premise. It is redundant to say "Jewish rabbi" when only rabbis are Jewish.
I'll just say it is just the way some people talk. Some might say "Muslim Imam" as well.
For the record, I'm Jewish and among us I've never seen the phrase "Jewish rabbi".

Can't say I have seen the term used- but it is useful when talking about a real Rabbi (Jewish) as oppossed to a Christian from the Christian sect of Messianic Judaism (or Jews for Jesus/Hebrew Christians/whatever eothe rname they choose to use to fraudently claim they are Jewish) who says they are a rabbi.
Note: Rabbi does NOT mean teacher- the hebrew for teacher is Moreh (male) or morah (female)- Rabbi means "my great one" (rav- large; "i" from the grammatical conjugation of the rav to my")

interesting-there are Messianic Rabbi's who according to the Jewish Scriptures are the only actual 'Jewish Rabbis'. The term Jewish Rabbi means a Jewish teacher.
Moses stated that there is no atonement without the shedding of blood. Leviticus 17:11
He will lay down his life to make atonement for our sins. Isaiah 52:13=53:12
At the comming of the Messiah for my people and all people, many of our Jewish people came to believe in him. The other made new religions rejecting Moses and Isaiah-Today they claim to be Jewish-along with even athiest Jewish by birth people, who are accepted by the others that reject the Messiah as Jews, Yet because of their common rejection of the Messiah they claim the Messianic Jew is not a Jew.
thus Jewish rabbi is an oximoron held by some today.

No, yet Jon brings up an exciting element. we are saying issues like NIC card (NIC = community Interface Card) or fat table (fat = record Allocation table). Christians have not got Rabbis, even though it particularly is further suggestion and labelling to declare Jewish Rabbis.
