IL has an FOID card and look how well that is working in Chicago. When you go to an FFL to by a firearm, they call in and run a check on you. To get a CCW permit you need a background check as well. I suggest you do a bit more research. To own any fully automatic weapon you need a FFL permit, with a class 1 stamp and go through an extensive background check, and have to follow all sorts of regulations. When you need a permit for something it is a privilege. Driving a car is a privilege, not a right. Firearms are a constitutional right. Having a permit would mean the government knows who owns what firearms. This isn't anyone's business.

many states require permit to purchase hand guns, My state does as well. The permit to purchase is an indication that you have passed the NCIC background check. I keep my permit to purchase current and present when I purchase a long gun, so the dealer does not have to make the call for background check. It saves time.
BTW a gun regardless of size or caliber has the capability of maiming or killing. A 22 caliber rifle can be just as deadly as a 12 guage shotgun if used incorrectly.
Shotguns, pistols, and rifles are only as safe as the personing carrying it.

you don't have to have a permit to own a pistol/revolver, its just a longer waiting period before you can purchase the firearm. typically 48hrs as opposed to the few hour waiting period for all long guns. The qualfications to purchase a pistol in iowa is as follows above 21 and no felony convictions. Now you do have to to obtain a permit to carry a pistol/revolver concealed, to do that you must go to a police station pay the appriopriate fee, go through an in depth background check, go through a two week course and qualify with that particular weapon. That permit allows you to carry that weapon into approved public places concealed. As to your safety question all firearms are dangerous, but the size difference of the two weapons make a difference. But that doesn't necessarly mean anything, for instance when shooting a pistol you have to control one bullet(one projectile) which is easier compared to a shotgun that fires literally hundreds of small projectiles in one shot.
hope this helps

Iowa is not the only place that requires a person to have a permit. I beleive you are suppose to have a permit anywhere in the United States. Pistols, revolvers, shotguns, any type of gun is unsafe. Where did u ever hear that shotguns are safer? I don't think so.

I am sure there are two real reasons why they have this set-up. Which isnt very different from Illinois FOID card.
First of all is money. The States gets the bucks from this " Tax". The second reason is to pander to a voting block that is anti-gun and get some votes.
The reason given is probably something like, " It will keep people alive and protect our citizens" No law has ever kept anyone alive. Just punished their killers.
Illinois is the same except here you have to have a FOID card for any firearms, owner or user, and anyone possessing ammo for same. I dont have any stats but am willing to bet, the State make bigs bucks annually from this"tax".

Shotguns aren't safer, really. Reason being, you cannot conceal a shotgun very easily, and most shotguns I've ever used don't have a 14 round clip you can use.
IE: Spray and Pray.
Besides, gang members couldn't lift a shotgun with one hand, hold it sideways and shoot it.

Because you can't just walk around with a shotgun in your pants. That is why you have to obtain a conceled weapons permit, not many people plan on carrying around a shotgun, although it would make a better self-defense weapon.

shotguns are safer because in home defense, shotgun rds especially the bird shot is less penetrating than pistol bullets are. You can choose your shotgun rds so its safer for your family... and neighbors.

Because the anti-gun lobby generally push the gun control laws. Unfornuately they generally don't know alot about guns because they don't like them. That is why most gun control laws end up making no sense when implemented and make it more difficult for law abiding citizens to purchase firearms.
