I am 18 years old and aspiring to win an NROTC scholarship . If I don't get it, I would like to enlist (and still attend college) but I'm afraid I don't "make the cut" in regard to medical standards. I have been prescribed prozac in the past, which did nothing to/for me, and also Adderall for Attention Deficit Disorder. However, the adderall was only because my brother was prescribed it and it did wonders for him and my mother immediately concluded that I too was ADD. Yet I was never really either depressed or attention-deficit, I was just bored with school and wanted a challenge (even after I applied to and attended a selective boarding school for a challenge, I was still bored.) I have always wanted to be in the Navy as I value structure, discipline and the Navy core values. I also am confident I would score quite high on the ASVAB because I always tested very high in school and on my SAT. What will absolutely disqualify a hopeful-seaman? ADD? Allergies? rosacea? cavities?

I don't have rosacea or cavities, (i do have allergies), but I wanted to get an idea of the sort of things that will absolutely disqualify, and how trivial those things were or were not. So any knowledge of anything at all that definitely disqualifies would also he helpful (the Navy website lists some things which "may" be disqualifying, whatever 'may' is meant to convey)

I have never met anyone who would tell the recruiter they were depressed, had ADD etc. Why would you disclose personal medical information? Take the ASVAB when the time comes and see what you qualify for.
If you are concerned about the meds, see a nutritionist and family doctor who can wean you off them.

Sweet Jesus !! These knuckle-heads ahead of me who "suggest" that you be dishonest about your situation are FOOLS... if you lie and are caught, you WILL be given a dishonorable discharge !! And if you had a NROTC scholarship at the time, you would have to repay the government.

NOW, if you are not TAKING the meds, you are okay. Rosacea is not disqualifying (knew a gal who had it), nor are cavities... Navy Dentists LOVE to fill cavities to stay in practice !!

I personally don't BELIEVE in this A.D.D. CRAP !! I had similar "issues" that you describe during high school... and then enjoyed Junior College because it was at MY pace.

I enlisted in 1985, two quarters shy of my B.A because I was out of college-funds. I went thru Aircrew and SAR-Swimmer training and then flew as a helicopter crewman for 6 years. I took lots of Navy courses, and finished the last classes for my BA on my shore-tour. I was back at sea for a year when I got my commission in the LDO (Limited Duty Officer) Program, and did 5 years in the position of an Aviation Operations Officer.

Oh, and the Navy NEVER got my Wisdom Teeth !!

Good Luck !

Allergies, rosacea, and cavities will not disqualify you. I don't know about ADD. I have heard from one of the flight doctors that ADD is a bad thing in the military. I don't know, however, if that just pertained to flight crew or not.

Do not openly disclose that information. When you have your medical physical at the MEPS station (after talking to your recruiter) if you are still on Adderall, then tell them. If you are not on any anti-depressants or ADD meds, don't tell them. You will be fine.

Nope you aren't getting disqualified for having a fracture earlier than, so long as their is NO predicament in any respect now. I used to be in an twist of fate identical to yours and that i broke my arm and received a plenty of scrapes. Im becoming a member of the Marines in two years.

Go to a Navy recruiting office and ask them, it's the best way to find out and it doesn't cost you anything. One disadvantage to that approach, you would have to leave your computer screen for a few hours......YIKES!
