I heard that a home rememdy for whitening your teeth was to mix baking soda and toothpaste together and then using that to brush your teeth, I was just wondering if anyone knew if it was ok to do this? or if it actually works?

Perfectly OK , in fact there is a baking soda paste on the market ,Arm & Hammer ,and another called Tom's of Maine .Some dentists recommend salt and baking soda as a paste ,but remember fluoride is really essential to harden the teeth against tooth decay

For five minutes every day, rinse your mouth with a swig of hydrogen peroxyde, then spit. The h.p. will lighten your teeth very nicely (and for practically no money). Brush after the h.p. treatment. If you ever have canker sores, you'll find that they no longer develop in your mouth or on your tongue. Baking soda cleans by slightly abrading the surface of your teeth (it's in some tooth pastes), while h.p. is non-abrasive. I've used it for years and have drawn comments from dental hygenists. You'll see a big difference in about a week.

over time, baking soda being an abrasive will wear away the enamel of your teeth, so I don't recommend using it on a daily basis. Maybe once or twice a week at most. Whether or not this will whiten your teeth depends, I think, on how stained they are to begin with.
