I am Buddhist. I practise Theravada Buddhism often called Southern Buddhism.

The Buddhist sacred Texts are known as the Pitakas...this is a Pali word meaning Baskets. The Texts are written in Pali and are grouped together into 3 Baskets known as the Tipitaka. The Texts are grouped thus because each of the Baskets have main themes.

The Vinaya Pitaka is the code of ethics used by Monks and the Nuns.

The Sutta Pitaka consists of accounts of the Lord Buddha's Teachings and commentaries, it contains over 10,000 Suttas.

The Abhidhamma Pitaka is also known as the Pali Canon. It is the definitive description of all Worldly phenomena and is the text used to examine and explain the Buddhist Concepts and methodology of Practise.

Theravada Buddhists do not believe in a Deity, nor do they believe that the Lord Buddha is a God, he is highly revered and respected as a man, a Teacher, a very wise and Compassionate man.

Other Traditions of Buddhism differ from Theravada in some ways yet all refer to 2 main themes, they are..

1. The Four Noble Truths and
2. The Noble Eightfold Path

The goal of Buddhist Practise is Liberation from suffering. This Liberation is refered to as Enlightenment.

I hope that I have helped you...

Peace from a Buddhist....
