I was wondering the same thing this summer so I found this article that the New York Times led me to. It's a wonderful site and they go over everything you put on your skin. It also talks about how anything over SPF 30 is only a very small percentage better.

Most of the commercial products on the market are so bad for your skin with the stuff they put into it, that you won't want to use them. Good luck! I hope others will go to the site as well.

sun block is preferable, and any sun block containing zinc oxide will do the job.
a sun screen is loaded with chemicals and there is some thought that even tho' they sheild from UVB and UVA radiation, those chemicals interact with the skin to cause cancers just as readily as no screen at all. And with sun screen, your time is limited. For instance, SPF 30 only gives you 30 minutes in the sun before you begin to burn so it has to be re-applied again and again and again....well you get the idea.
