SAS. They were in the Falklands weeks before the Argentine invasion. That's how we scared off those argies so darned quick.

I would suggest the SAS have had a lot more investment in a terms of skills and equipment, as well as maintaining the most stringent selection criteria. Some of the supporting technologies that western SF have are also bound to give them a bit of an edge.

Bear in mind the term SPETSNAZ (forces of special designation) is a much misused term. The Russians have a range of 'special forces' and frankly some are not much more than very motivated, fit and reasonably well-equipped police SWAT squads. It seems a whole range of Russian ministries have SPETSNAZ.

Even if you mean Army/Naval Infantry SPETSNAZ, then SAS are probably still going to be more effective, because the years of neglect that the Russian armed forces have sustained; even the elite VDV and Naval Infantry have suffered badly, and they traditionally provided the raw material for military SPETSNAZ.

I am not to sure, but MVD (Interior Ministry) and FSB SPETSNAZ might have fared better in terms of investment, but even they would be pushed to outperform in-role SAS CT units, or even the likes of GSG-9.

SPETSNAZ! there is no hardier warrior than the Russian guy. Many techniques used to coach the Spetsnaz could be considered cruel and unusual punishment by utilising western eu/Anglo American standards. Patriotism (of the plenty) runs plenty deeper in Russia to boot and which could be why adult males are keen to undergo greater problem for the protection of their people. That being mentioned, all specific forces gadgets regardless of national beginning place are crammed with high quality warriors.

Well the question is a little loaded as the Russians have a far bigger force, but in the cold war I never heard of any spetsnaz getting into any UK military bases, either in the UK or in Europe.

But "The Boyz" visited the east a few times.

The Russian Spetsnaz are a highly trained service on a par with our SAS, so I would say they are about equal.

British SAS - best in the world. Actually though the SBS are as good if not better. British SAS carry out ops for foreign governments all the time and train many overseas special forces.

Russian Spetsnaz. Average Russian soldier is more used to hardship than British counterpart and will put up with anything to get the job done. Russian armed forces rely less on technology and more on strength of manpower. Spetsnaz are trained to be supremely fit and withstand anything

The British SAS, without a doubt. They are the commando unit that most every other special operations group in the world have based their organizations on.

that reminds me...must get some more vodka ;)

Spetsnaz are more about overwhelming aggression rather than tactically superior.

However having witnessed a spetznaz section undergoing martial arts training in full battle gear It gave me a new admiration.

think of them more like shock troops and less like stocking and suspenders and you may get there a bit quicker.
