I have heard it happen. The people who do this should be charged with tampering with a number plate and so should those using fancy lettering and unusual spacing. The correct way is contained in a road traffic Statutory Instrument and has the full force of law. The whole point of number plates is so that the car can be traced if there is an accident or an offence has been committed. It is in fact an attempt to pervert the co use of justice although I do not think that generally this would be used

When you purchase a personalised plate, you will see on the paperwork a statement to the effect that "...it is an offence to alter the layout, spacing or otherwise modify a registration plate, so that the display does not conform with current regulations."

When I picked up the paperwork for my personal plate from my Local Vehicle Licencing Centre, the chap behind the desk actually made me promise I wouldn't make my number plate read like a word (seriously!).

You can be stopped for doing this, You may get a warning or a 30 pound non-endorsable fixed penalty notice for the first time your stopped if you continue to do it you can have your personnel plate confiscated by the DVLA.

Just use a yellow or white screw it's not worth the hassle.

Licence plates have mounting holes. The rest of the plate is not to be defaced. If nothing else, this will probably get you pulled over and explain why you did it.

It does bring you to the attention of the Traffic police who will have the excuse to pull you over and turn you over and do you for everything including the dodgy plates

No this has never happened to anyone I know were you using the holes that are already there for the screw to go into ?

If not its defacing the plate and no doubt illegal

no as I live in Germany, and I have a personalised plate that didn't cost me a year's wages!

But in the UK, yes if you alter the look of the number, you can be pulled over, and fined.
