Most companies give you a ten-day grace period when it comes to switching your coverage from an old vehicle to a new vehicle. You'll want to get it done as soon as possible just so things are taken care of, but you've more than likely got time!
Though, know this much - you'll only be covered with the coverages you've currently got on the old car. So if you had liability only on old car, you'll have liability only on new car and no physical damage protection.

You can start driving the car immediately. You should tell the insurance company as soon as possible, of course. If the dealership was on the ball, they'd have completed the forms for the title transfer and licensing, so you only need to handle the insurance.

I would think that you would have to inform your insurance company first. If you are not sure why would you risk driving and not knowing if you're covered or not. I would wait until you speak with the insurance people.

Call your insurance company and work it out. They can fax or email you your paperwork and you'll be ready to go. I typically do this at the dealer before I drive off the lot. Just a phone call away.

Read your policy. Mine says that they guarantee coverage on any car the policy holder purchases and gives 15 days to report the purchase to insurance.

Insurance companies aren't filled with mind readers. How would they know you bought a new car? You need to contact your agent and let them know.

In PA, you don't get the keys unless you have ins. The salesman can take care of that in 5 minutes.
I'm surprised you didn;t think it was important, otherwise, you would not have this problem.
