so far, i understand this. Jack russells:
- dont do well in small houses, apartments or flats as they need room to exercise
- they can be aggressive and defensive against other dogs
- although loyal, they will run off if they spot a small animal running despite your calls
- they will dig under fences if left unsupervised
- if left alone in the house, they can destroy the whole house in search of you
these are some of the things i know

my jack russell is NOT like this at all. he never runs around the whole place going made though he does get excited when welcome home. he copes fine in our small flat and loves being near us.
after being desexed, he has done much better in training and has improved his habit of always marking trees. he loves other dogs and has not and will not do anything to hurt them. he is very friendly, not defensive and always up for a game when i feel like it.
he doesnt have a bad attitude and is always happy everyday, literally! he actually never has bad day!

he gets scared so easily! not a brave dog
so why is he not a typical jack russell? or have any of its common traits?

he does chase small animals tho. when he went to smell a cat, it just stood there, arched its back and he got scared away

is the jack russell breed becoming less and less what they were bred to do?

Dogs have very diffrent personalities. And Jack Russells are like always having a kid around.

My parents have a Mother and Father and there 2 daughters. (All Jack Russells)

-The mother (Dusty) is rotten. You talk to her and she goes and gets under the bed. She refuses to show her love for you.
-The father (Blade), is very protective. He would attack my Dad if he tried to kiss my mother, and has been recentally moved to a pen PERMITALLY, for killing my Moms kitten. He was raised around cats and Hates them.
-The first daughter (Sparky), is nosey. Runs in circles and will drive you up a wall. She never stays still and chases her mom and dad around barking at them.
-The other daughter (Sissy), she is the peace maker. When everyone is running around barking and snapping, she is getting between them giving kisses. She loves cuddling with the rest of the family. And she is sweet and relaxed.

They all in fact will run off and find something dead and rotting or poop to roll in.

The all dig. Your doesnt because you keep it inside. You will in fact see it dig if it ever see's a rat. They will dig up rats. They dig up the rats and take them to the outside dog (Rocky) a Pit and Sheep dog mix, and he takes them and drops them in his water bucket and drounds them. I dunno why they just do.

Being nervous is VERY common for dogs, expecially small breeds. When a storm is comming they will sit around whining and shaking. My moms dogs climb on the bed and wiggle under the covers when a storm is comming.

a common misconception people have is that every dog of one breed are just alike... this is not true... dogs have personalities ( i am not being a wako here... i have trained many dogs and they are all different... even if they are the same breed)... some dogs of one breed are really calm, others will be bouncing off the roof... My pitbull is the sweetest dog and my boarder collie hates everyone... so when it comes to dogs there are things that are good about some breeds but its not a sure thing... count your blessing that you didn't get the typical jack russell... I have trained a few and they can be pains...

Dogs, like people, are very different, and do not always follow their breed. I have met horrible, and amazing dogs of the same breed, and it is not something bad. Actually, I find it good, as dogs should be different in personality.

A dog is not how it's breed is, it is how it has been trained, and the influences by other people. I think you are being a great owner to your jack russell, and he is following you into good habits and a loving personality.

There are lines in many breeds that will not/ can not do what the breed was created for - labs afraid of water, greyhounds that won't chase, setters that won't hunt birds, collies that wont herd..... in a few cases this is good, and in some it can be good or bad (in a pet home they are fine but a huge failure in a home that needs them to do the job). Mostly this is considered undesirable because we'll the breed was developed to do the job...but occasionally those breeding for the show ring or the pet market continue it...
And yes my family too had a JTR that wouldn't hunt rats "valuable show line" - we needed a rat hunter and considered her useless ....
PS I HAVE seen dogs who can do the job but don't have typical temperment away from it - you might be suprised if your JTR ever sees a small rodent!

We have gone a long ways in understanding the reasons not to stereotype people as in Mexicans are this way, women are this way, older people are this way etc.

So why be surprised if your dog isnt fitting into a steroetype?

Each pure breed does have a statistical probability of exhibiting certain types of behaviors but wont necessarily do so.

Each dog is an individual and a certain amount of his personality is dependant on the care, training and socializing he is getting and has been getting up till now.

It sounds like your happy with your little friend and I am glad. He needs you to love him and appreciate him for who he is, not his pedigree. Good for you.

Jack Russels don't breed true to form which is why they are not regarded as a breed by Crufts.
Also 'desexing' would have a calming effect on most dogs.

Think about who you bought him from, or where? That will answer 99 % of your questions. Did your breeder show, compete in agility or something that showcased the dogs knowlege and lack of fear/ nervousness? Or did your breeder just breed two dogs together not caring about whether they were bred for their original purpose, not bothering getting health clearences, properly socializing the puppies, making sure the parents were mentally stable and up to the breed standard? The dogs are not the nightmare people make them out to be UNLESS they are poorly bred and raised improperly...(see your list of bad doggie stuff)

Well, some pets are just not like their breed. for example, my friend's guiena pig doesn't seem like the typical piggy; loving to be held. It's probably good your puppy is like that; don't argue! :D
