Anyone have any ideas, it's a neat trick I'd like to teach my dog.

Hi, My dog knows a "wait" command, so, I started by holding her chin and balancing the cookie on her nose, and telling her to wait. if she waited just a second, I told her ok, Good Girl!! We kept practicing, I'd tell her to wait, and made a hand signal (holding up my pointer finger).
Practice, praise and patience, and now she will sit there with the cookie on her nose for a few minutes.
I also trained ehr to balance a cookie on her paw while she is waving. :-)
Good Luck!!!

When I was a kid my dad taught our dog to do that. MEL_731 did just about the same thing my dad did. Only my dad did it with a tennis ball, no food urge there and you can do it over and over without making the dog fat. And my dad said "hold it". After a while he would let go and say "OK" and Deacon would roll the ball into his mouth. Later we started doing it with treats.

when you put the cheetoh on his nose tell him no eating it and take the cheetoh off if he starts to eat it. repeat the procedure till he learns. he will learn if you are consistent.
Good Luck!
