We don't necessarily believe it in quite the way you think. God does not personally give people diseases, but He can allow it to happen. Diseases may or may not be a punishment, sometimes they are simply a trial in a person's life, and sometimes they are just there to keep population growth in check.

Not everyone believed this way, that ALL diseases were a punishment from God...at least not Jesus Christ.

Only a couple of months ago I saw a fundie say that Epilepsy is caused by demons. Yep!! I swear that ignorance was spouted in 2007!!

yeah, they did. during the Black Death/plagues in the Middle Ages, they went on marches and stuff whipping themselves, to show God they were "sorry for their sins" and to try and persuade him to take away the disease, and spare them.

Well, it does say in scripture, that if you are true to God, he will keep disease from you, so i guess that says alot.
