My son and his friends wants to take a trip down to Florida from Maryland next weekend. They want to rent a car for the trip down. All 3 of them are planning to drive because of the long journey. They're 20,19,and 18 years old.
We looked up car rentals and it said that the person picking up the car has to be 25+.

I'm wondering if the car rental insurance, under my name, will cover all 3 of them?

The care rentals are "unlimited miles" and we're returning it to where we rented it. Also, the minimum age for renting is 25, so they can't rent it for themselves.

The only way to get a correct answer is to contact the rental agency. Do not depend on your own insurance polcy to cover any damages. Most males need to be 25 to be covered or be living in the insured home. If you lie to the rental agency and there is an accident in the car you signed for, you can be held responsible for allowing an uninsured driver to operate the vehicle.

they can cover them if you have them all go with you and show them their licenses I think.

But they should fly to Florida and then rent a car there because they will charge you a lot of money if they put that many miles on the car. It would end up being cheaper for them to fly and rent a car in Florida.

Oh. well, then I think you need to be in the car at all times if you are going to let someone else drive it. But I would still have those kids just go on a plane and then walk or take taxis around Florida...

or buy a car...

NO NO NO.
The minimum age is 25. That means if you rent it for him YOU are liable for any damage to the car-and no insurance will cover it as the car is operated illegally (the rental agreement is violated making it illegal).
25 means 25. 25 to rent, 25 to drive.

Bad idea and illegal.

True story:
When I was about 19...had a group of friends that rented a van to go to Canada....ages ranged from 23 to 18. Eight people who didn't even drink much. All in college. Only the 23 old could rent....and he chose to do it...and let others drive.

What happened: we rotated drivers. Over and over for 3 days. On the way back...the 18 year old was driving...in the rain in upstate NY on the way back. The road was slick...and she over corrected.

Result: 7 people in hospital. One crush pelvis, one head injury, two injured necks....one broken leg. Much pain for 7 families. We had to lie about who was driving..there could have been bad lawsuits from every parent and family member. ....very bad decision.

There are reasons for laws. Don't break it. 3 guys are not a safe combo for renting. Especially to Florida. Why do it to yourself?

it's ok....all you have to do is add them on as additional drivers onto the rental. Also, make sure you get enough insurance. They can't rent the car, but they can drop it off.

Yes you can.
As long as he is a permissive driver, your own auto policy will extend to the rental and it will cover it in the event of an accident. I would also let your insurance agent know, just to be safe.

While this is nice of of you, I don't think they are old enough to drive a rental car. You'd have to check with the car rental company.

Probably not, and a very bad idea even if you could. The minute you tell them 3 divers under age, they will charge a surcharge at the least.
