I assume you, or the person passing out, are British and that we are talking about the Royal Navy. This is a very old and traditional arm of the British forces and has some strange rules, but if you adhere to them it will make an already special day even better.

Firstly you should wear some form of head-dress, just like the sailors on parade. The traditional straw hat is most appropriate - for a really authentic touch, tie a brightly coloured ribbon around it.

If you are male, a horizontally striped blue and white shirt is practically de rigeur, but thick, white woolen jumper is equally acceptable. For females a striped shirt is also good, however the stripes should run vertically.

A sober pair of trousers (or a skirt for females) is also good, but better still is a pair of bell bottoms. But even in such a bastion of olden day values as the Royal Navy times have changed: many of today's guests at a passing out parade will opt for brightly coloured 'Bermuda' shorts.

Finally pay close attention to your footwear. Again we differentiate between old and new - if you want the old look then go for a pair of Dutch wooden clogs. But if your preference is for the new, and that goes for most people these days, then borrow some shoes from your local bowling alley.

I hope this helps, have a great day.

For Dad, shirt, tie with Jacket /Blazer, casual trousers
Mum, dress & jacket, suit, suggest a hat in the boot of the car in case it is necessary having seen other parents... no jeans, shorts rucksacks or trainers/ flipflops.... smart but casual unless you are an Officer cadet , then step it up for Dad to wear a suit etc
Good luck on the parade, any military passing out parade is full of emotion, the social side afterwards is great

Dress as you were going to a wedding. But dont wear blue.

As you don't want to clash with all the blokes in their tight little skimpy sailor outfits, just like what Dafyyd from Little Britain would wear.

well my advice is go with some mates one as a biker ,one a steel worker ,one as a Indian and one as a cowboy . I'm sure you can find a guy in a navy suit , and then its party time . no but to be serious . wear what you would as a guest to say a weeding or a christening

Well, when I go to see someone pass out, I usually go casual, with a nice bottle of scotch and I pass out not long after them

Male.Suit,shirt tie and polished shoes.
Lady.Suit or pretty but not flashy dress and jacket.(or wrap) and pretty but comfortable shoes.
Have a lovely day and have a hankie handy( I wept with pride when my sons passed out in the RAF.)

Definately smart. My experience is army but thesame rules apply. (I'm assuming you area guy?) so smart suit, nice shirt (any colour except maybe pink, we all know what those navy guys are like they might get excited! ha!) and a tie.

Formal and smart because the navy is also a disciplined military unit.

I think that skirts tend to either look kind of trashy or cheap if they are tight and short, or these are just the ordinary jean skirts that aren't necessarily sexy.
