The newer ships actually have what is called pods to propel the ship. These pods, usually 3 or 4, are suspended under the ship much like the engines on airplanes are suspended under wings. The pods are attaches in such a manner that they can be rotated 180 degrees. They are not connected directly to an engine but are electric. The electricity is provided by an internal diesel engine which generates the power to run them.

So they use diesel to make electricity to propel the ship

All cruise ships run on diesel fuel. The newer ships have low emission stacks and are very efficient. The same engines that propel the ship through the water also power the electrical generators and systems on board. For this reason, ships will always have more fuel on board than necessary. They fill up at their home port during the window between arrival and sailing.

yes...they run with gas....they a lot of extra gas with them....for instance, if it was a 7 day cruise, they take enough gas with them to go on a 12 days cruise....if they end of needing more gas at the port of call they will re- fuel....but that rarely happends because they always have extra...hope this helps!!!!!!! = ]

They use many thousand of gallons of diesel fuel. They fill up at the places they dock when they get back from a trip.
