red is probably not a goodidea in a small room, it will make it seem smaller, depends what your room is?? i am thinking it must be your bedroom, why not keep it a warm colour/neutral creamy and paint the door frames/skirting boards(around the bottom of the wall) a stonger colour, any pics or posters will look better on a softer colour, if your using posters why not stick them on a backing paper/board which is the same colour has the skirting etc, so they have an edge to them.

What effect do you want to create? Red is a pretty bold choice. If you want to change to something lighter, you will need a lot of primer, like KILZ

Use a light color, like the color of the flower on this website.

Any sharp color is not soothing, try vanilla, cream, or pink
