What role does an dysfunctional "social safety net" (health care, etc.) play in promoting a religious faith?

Michael Moore's new movie "SiCKO" suggests that Europeans & Canadians are more secure about their access to health care and other social networks. It is also true that they are more secular in their beliefs than are Americans, whose health care is questionable at best.

Does American doubts about the ability of society to meet its needs encourage its citizens to turn to myth-based beliefs, similar to the third world?

As a Canadian, while our health care does have flaws and is very hard to keep up, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Everyone is treated equally.

I think you make a very valid point about people turning to a higher power wen they can't afford medical bills.

What else can they do but pray when they can't afford proper health care?

As a Canadian, I feel very secure about my health care. When I was very ill 2 1/2 years ago I never had to worry about how expensive my hospital treatment was going to be...I was never questioned as to whether I could afford to be admitted to the hospital..not that I could have given them a coherent answer...
I don't really know if Americans turn to myth-based beliefs because of that. But I suspect that you are onto something, I suspect that it is true.
I know that the Canadian system has flaws...but I also know that the previous opinions that stated that they would look after themselves in a health crisis (through a higher power or whatever) are a little mistaken in the Canadian system. In the end I paid for my medical coverage (higher taxes, etc)..through a sort of enforced savings plan. The plan assured that I would have quality care. It's like paying an insurance premium.

Totally agree,from what I've seen and heard social conditions in parts of the u.s.,are similiar to a lot of third world countries.We dont always realise how lucky we are in Western Europe.

I don't expect anyone to meet my needs. God has provided for me since I accepted Him 50 years ago. I am not a Democrat who expects the Government to supply all my needs.
