Yes! An all seed diet's very bad for birds, and often leads to fatty liver disease, and many other health issues. I recommend you join the Yahoo group, Feeding Feathers. They provide excellent parrot nutrition and diet info and advice, and will be able to go into detail of what to stay away from (and why), and the best foods to feed (and why) for your particular bird. Hope the link works!

Yes yes yes!!! It's always a good idea to suppliment your birds diet with fruits and veggies.
Some of my parrots favorites are: Dark leafy greens (romaine and kale lettuce), peppers, yams, strawberries, bananas, carrots, and apples.
You can also give them unbuttered, unsalted popcorn, pasta, and various treats.
These are only a favorite of my birds as there are TONS of things you can give them. What I do for my bird here and at work is chop everything up in a food processor and put the mixture in an icecube tray. Add a little water and freeze it. Then, every morning, I pop a cube out and give him one. Very very easy and I don't end up wasting half of the produce I buy.
Seed diets are also not the best. As you have seen they pick through and only eat what they want. This can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies as they are not getting a complete diet. Switching to a pellet diet is also a good idea. It will take forever, but slowly introduce the pellets (zupreem is a good option and easy to find) in with the seed and see what happens.

Hi,
As someone else said, look up your species on the net to see what they require, but most birds do eat fresh fruit and veggies (no apple seeds or avocados) these items are deadly to birds. Birds eat seeds in the wild, so I definitely give my birds a good seed mix and pellets also. They can be fed chicken and fish also. Chicken bones (the marrow) is really good for birds. My birds even get pork chop bones sometimes. I feed them boiled and scrambled eggs, oatmeal, cream of wheat (with banana, cinnamon mashed in), etc.

Parrots are tamed from wild birds. Find a web site on your parror by typing in their breed. You will find out what they like that way. Most parrots eat all sorts of fruits and vegetables and like thinks to nibble that are crunchy as well, but it is always best to read up on what they normally eat in the wild or what their breed needs to live a normal, healthy life. Not all things are good for every parrot, and too much of something can also be unhealthy since they also need a balanced diet just like we do.

The bird book for Dummies is a great book to tell you what is good people food for parrot type birds. It also tells what food and plants are harmful to birds. Do not give your bird large portions of bread or starchy food (cereals) frequently because the bird will develop a yeast infection. A very small peice of bread or cereal every couple of months is ok.

Just about any food that YOU eat is fine for birds, with some exceptions, like avocado. Mine get a huge variety every day, including a good seed/pellet mix. My birds eat just about anything I eat (I don't eat avocados either, so no danger there). I give them mixed vegetables and fruit every single day, they love cooked pasta and rice, they go nuts for cooked chicken bones (their favorite is the little wing bones -- they crack them open and eat the marrow). They will track you down for a walnut or peanut.

Of Course!
Once I used to have birds in my yard and I used to feed them with other things besides seeds. But actually it depends on the birds. I used to have ducks and ducklings for some time and besides their seeds I used to feed them with different kind of vegetables and etc.... such as cocumber, boiled rice, pieces of bread which were put in water for sometime to be smoother and ...... And also after that I moved from that place I so did not have convenient place to have them I used to have hen and some chickens. I remember that I feed them with everything from vegetables to ........ besides the seeds. Everything that every kind human can use, but maybe in another form. Even raw ar baked MEAT, and although I feed them with pieces of meat regularly, but I didn't feel any difference in their behavior!
Try to feed them with everything, I think that they are more rational than some human beings and do not eat whatever that is not appropriate,
