cats are really territorial, but i dont think that she would leave.
i had two cats, we got the second one when my older cat was around 18 or 19, and the kitten annoyed her soo much cause she was an older cat. but they were both outdoor cats and i dont think you would have much of a problem, they hissed at each other, and the kitten would jump on her tail and run away, but it wasnt a huge problem, for the most part they stayed away from each other. sometimes we would put the (now 3-year-old) kitten downstairs with the dogs so she would hide behind a couch and get a taste of her own medicine... i dont think it would be a problem for you because a 5-year-old cat isnt very old, and your cat sounds playful and hard-to-annoy.
i must say that i disagree with willowrose, neither cat payed less attention to us when we second cat. and i would recommend another female, males spray and are more territorial, even after they are fixed.

You might want to try the opposite gender. Females tend to get along better with males and vice versa. I have a 7 year old male cat and a one year old female cat and the kitten seemed to make the older cat feel young again! He'll actually play where as before he'd just lay around.
If you're afraid Rita will take off and not come back, then it's best not to bring another kitten into the family right now. But generally I would say try it. Take note though that sometimes when a second cat is brought into the home, neither pay as much attention to the owners anymore! They're usually too busy taking care of each other.

We've had the best luck introducing a kitten of the opposite gender to the main cat. For some reason this works out best and they get along.
It gets harder when you have several cats (both genders), then which way do you go with a kitten? It's always going to depend on the cats. Given enough time they'll all get along.

I don't think that your cat Rita would get jealous, if you associated them, and they didn't fight. If you give them equal attention, they'll most likely be fine.

Just make sure you get a male. I hear 2 females are not good.

It depends on your cat's attitude. If your cat is gentle then slowly introduce him bit by bit to Rita.If that doesn't work, take the kitten back.

you could try, but I won't do it, cause cats are very territorial and they think someone new is invading her space.
