I'm impressed. That's one of the best questions I've seen here.
Folks, this is what "questioning an assumption" looks like.

Yes, the path of truth can make you free from all of your wishes. The first of all if you go on the path of truth, you need not follow any religion as the path of truth is itself a best religion among the all religions and it is stated in Ved,Puran, and for ordinary person Ramayan etc.Accordingly,if you follow the truth path then you follow the best religion and thus you are free(should not bother) about religions. Secondly, truth path is not so easy (but not impossible also) on which you can follow by studying the books. For truth path you need the guidence and society of followers of truth path. It is not easy to get such society? Moreover,if you get success to get guidence of followers of truth path then automatically you will become the follower of truth path. The truth implies the honesty and vica verse and thus you would be able to have both the qualities and you would be true and honest. At this junction your internal voice will be right and what ever you will speak that would be true for ever even for future time. On the followers of truth path, life & death, sorry & happy, profit & loss, fame & defame , friends &enemies have no difference.. Accordingly, truth can set you free from all worries of worldly things as stated above.

Greetings Friend,
The truth will set us free. The question is do we want to be free? Sort of like the Matrix, what if everything you believed was a lie? The whole idea of who you thought you were was wrong - was an illusion. Would you want to know? Or does the idea seems so scary that it is not worth checking out? The freedom in knowing who we are brings peace. We get upset because we do not realize who we are. Our egos get offended, which causes us discomfort. Once we see the truth, we can let go of all these ideas and be who we are. In this we are free.

Here's a question to answer your question. How does this apply in a court of law where the truth may give you 10 years to life in prison? Actually, I agree with one of the answerers who aluded to the truth spoken of in this quote was a personification, not a concept. Lot's of good answers. I think as a general application, the truth that sets you free is the fact that we can choose how we react to life. No one, for instance, can "make" us mad. That is how we choose to react and we can learn to respond to anger in anyway we wish. And, that the most powerful response on earth is Love. Peace

Some really great answers James and I applaud your question. The lie starts with society and religion "pinning" a person down, the truth begins to manifest when a person begins to see this. They begin to realise that they have been conditioned to be slaves or controlled, this works so well that most begin to repeat the conditioning to themselves through there thoughts. Freedom is outside thoughts. One must learn to be still to know freedom. The truth is, is that people have always been free but have had to believe lies. Telling the truth is dangerous to the physical body here in most of the world, look what happened to Jesus and the resulting lies about what happened. ~*~

Are we 'free' now, I mean most of us ?
I doubt that anyone would really try to suggest that we are.
For those who think that they are free by reason of 'wealth' and 'power', I recommend reading Gurdjieff's 'Beelzebub, His Tales to His Grandson, from the 'All and Everything' series. His piece on perceived 'freedom' is a treat, although it can be painful to accept it's bitter truth.
So why are we not free ? The answer is also quite bitter, we live in a world of lies.
When we started this experiment we all came here with the exact same amount of 'power', truly equal. Somehow that has changed, and now there are a few, very few, in real terms, who hold the vast majority of the 'power' and 'wealth'. How did they get it ? By constructing a world-wide web of lies, the 'Divine Right of Kings', the 'Divine Infallibility' of the Pope, and his 'Church', 'Droit de Seigneur'.
Our leaders, both religious and secular, have conned us into handing over stewardship of our collective 'power', and have thanked us by promptly turning around and using that power to enslave us.
The truth is that, ultimately, none of us has the right to impose our will on any other. If we were truly 'civilised', as we are led to believe ( another big fat lie ) then we would not even dream of doing such a thing. Crime has been created by the fear of want, a thing deliberately imposed by those in power. In this day and age we are still bombarded ( a supremely appropriate word use ) by the propaganda machine of the fear-mongers.
This question works on so many levels, as I am sure was intended by the asker, and it is clear to me that only by dispensing with all versions of falsehood can we truly regain our freedom.
A suggestion.
The first step on recovery of a world of truth would be to do away with all forms of secrecy. This is the cloak under which the worst of the excesses are committed.
One of the greatest proofs of this, if anyone needs proof, is the antithesis of this declaration, that was used to 'decorate' the gates of :
Auschwitz, Dachau, Sachsenhausen, Gross-Rosen, Theresin, and many others :
"Arbeit Macht Frei" or "Work Makes You Free"

I am the way, the truth and the life. The truth is not a set of ideas, concepts or an understanding; but the person and presence of Christ Jesus. If one understands who he is, and can touch him, he brings freedom for he is both light and truth.
Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. No idea however fine or correct can free a human soul. Ideas may be necessary pointers; but truth is a man named Jesus Christ.

When telling the truth to someone, it comes easily because it is real and has actually occured and really works when put together. Therefore making it easy to recount.
When telling lies, it is more difficult to recount everything as lies need to be continually manufactured to make a story make sense. But this adds to the amount of lies that one needs to remember. This makes it rather difficult to maintain in one's head.
Lies also play a part on one's guilt and conscious. When telling the truth, you don't feel so bad because people know the REAL story.

Hi!
Like Pilate, many of us would not recognise the truth if it was staring us in the face. When we know the truth, there is no thing at all anywhere in existence that can harm us. Nothing to fear, not even death. That is a really liberating thing to know. We are often prisoners to illusions. The truth banishes them all. The Atheist, Buddhist, Christian .... truth is the one we all benefit from knowing.
Do you know the truth?
Does someone who knows a different truth know the truth?
Good wishes.

Admitting to the truth of all things brings one fully into the 'light of day'. When you admit the truth about yourself, you can then go about changing the bad things, and keeping the good things. LIES no longer become a part of your life, and you no longer have to hide from things.
It is very liberating.
From one who has been there and is doing that.
