Where can I get information about travelling up to the snow for a weekend in Victoria?

I'm 21 and I've never been to the snow. But I want to go this year and I'm pretty lost as to where to go for information. I don't want to stay in fancey expensive places and I have no idea about anything. So do I go to a travel agent? or are there good websites? Help.
