Paint, change the cabinet handles, put crown molding stuff around the ceilings in the living areas (have to be mitered but parts are CHEAP and looks so nice!), new front door..something bright, new storm door, if replacing carpet, lay laminant wood instead, landscape front and back yars with plants, rocks. (You can get some great cleareance plants at the plant stores!) Mostly, make the house look BRIGHT. Also, this made a HUGE difference our realtor said: I recalked around the kitchen counters! Powerwash the driveway. We also rented a storage space (22 a month) to eliminate clutter.

These are all good answers - the first thing you see when you're looking at a house is the exterior - It has to look well cared for - well planned is the key people look for - if it's simple and can simplify their lives if they purchase this house, then they're most likely to buy it especially when that reflects to the inside as well - what don't you like about the house, they may not either so emphasize on the best features and plan ways to utilize the worst to fit the big picture....basements should not be gross and smelly or damp - correct the things you can (waterproof paint in basements for example.)
If I were to move into a new environment, I wouldn't want to have to do much of anything but unpack and decorate my new surroundings - not clean and mow and have to paint eyesores.
Put yourself in the buyers shoes and take a better look at what can be improved if you were buying.

Your best bet is to invest your money in a uniform style throughout the home, whether it be a modern look, or old traditional, keep the style going from room to room. Cheap ways to increase your homes value would have to start in the kitchen. Make sure it looks appealing, appliances, counters, etc. From there go with window treatment and lighting. That is an essential home buyers look for and with 1,000 dollars it can add about 5-8,000 on your homes value.

After househunting for over a year I could write a book on this. My recommendation is to first focus on first impressions. That includes curb appeal, painting the front door, pressure washing the outside to get rid of any mold or spider webs. Clean like crazy everything inside the house. Get rid of things to make it look more spacious. The list goes on.....

Curb appeal is important but so are updated kitchens and baths, in particular the master bath. Cleaning out clutter and reorganizing is a great start as well.

Clean it.
Paint it.
Adding or extending an outdoor deck is one of the things you can do to increase the value of a house.
