The meaning/definition of it in french would be most appreciated.

Hi there!

Vermont is derived from two french words:

vert (green, which is pronounced without the 't')
mont (mountain)

Thus, Ver(t)mont means 'Green Mountain.'

Ver= vert
mont= mount, hill

It literally means ''green mount/hill'' and not mountain, which is montagne in French.

It's just that people nowadays choose to translate it as mountain, and I frankly find it odd.

Another example is:

Montréal.
Mont= mount
réal = old French word for ''royal''

Mount Royal.

It's a contraction of vert mont, meaning green mountain.
