Islam in Arabic does not mean peace but submission. If Muslims say they are a religion of peace let them explain the following.
In Sura 2:216, Allah, their God, is supposed to have said this to Muslims: "Fighting is prescribed upon you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that you love a thing, which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth and ye know not."
Here we see some reluctance on the part of Muslims to fight; but Allah tells them, "I know what is good for you."
There are many Suras in the Quran, which prove beyond doubt that Islam is a religion of violence. Islamic Fundamentalists have used these teachings to justify their actions. Jihad is not a one-time event. It is a continuing operation until the entire world is converted to Islam.
"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, … nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book [Jews and Christians]" (Sura 9:29). Anyone who thinks we can achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East needs to have his head examined.
Muslims say that these Suras apply only during the time of Muhammad. But the Quran does not explicitly or implicitly say that. In fact, Islam divides the world into two houses: The House of Islam and the House of War. The goal of Islam is to dominate the world and Muslims believe they are justified in using violence to achieve this goal.
Of course, there are many Muslims who do not subscribe to the literal interpretation of the Quran. I have known many Muslims and I know the majority of Muslims just want peace and the well being of their families.
What Islam needs right now is a reform movement. There are many traditions and teachings of Islam, which are no longer relevant today. Women's rights and religious intolerance are just two, which come to mind.
Peace and blessings!

"8.61": And if they incline to peace, then incline to it and trust in Allah; surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
And the salut in Islam is "Assalamu Alaikom wa rahmatollahi wa barakato"which is"Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and his blessings"
"49.10": The believers are but brethren, therefore make peace between your brethren and be careful of (your duty to) Allah that mercy may be had on you.
And as for all the verses that contain fight the disbelievers by which people claim that islam is not a religion of peace, all of them are taken out of context because if they read carefully the verses which preceed them they would find muslims will fight the disbelievers only when the disbelievers start the attack.Someone with more knowledge will give you more answers.Allahu A3lam.

Don't listen to the all above me, it's not true about wars and buildings.
There are many sections in Quran saying so, but I don't have it in English, so sorry.
But about actions, I'll tell you. Islam tends to make the muslim community a very peaceful one, how? It aims to make the people like a one body that never separates, with the regulations Islam came by that happens:
Everyone should be always kind to his parents, family, friends, neighbours,.....he should never say sth bad about anyone, he should always offer help when he can, so the community would always be collabirating, no hate for each other.
There's sth in Islam called "Zakah", that is there to help poor, it obliges the rich people to give so little amount of their money to the poor, so we can elemenate poverty, and that happened in the time of our great prophet Mohammed, but now it's not very well applied, unfortunately.
Islam aims to make the community very peaceful with the other, it doesn't force anybody to convert (that's sth that many people don't understand), Islam forbids strictly killing any innocent soul, whether it's a believer or a disbeliever.
There's a lot more, but I'm tired of typing :)

Funny thing...the only Muslim that bothered to answer you "doesn't have it in English"...
I have a copy of the Koran...in English...that I asked for and was given by CAIR.
Believe me, there is NOTHING in there that advocates peace with anyone who is not a Muslim.
There is plenty about killing them, and making them submit, and taking a protection tax from them...but not one single word about being at peace with them.
I don't know if CAIR is still giving away copies...they may have "wised up" since folks like me are reading it, and talking about what it really says...but if they are, everyone needs to get a copy and read that thing.
Trust me, it will be an eye-opening experience...that is, if you can manage to get through it. It isn't exactly poetry...

NOTICE NO ANSWERS.
There literally is no reason. The only one you ever get is "Islam means peace", which is essentially no answer. Even if it did literally mean peace, to call Islam a religion of peace would require doctrines of peace and actions consistent with that doctrine.
Islam literally means "submission" and rest assured, on no account whatsoever can it be called a religion of peace...this is the most grotesque euphamism in human history.
Everything about the actions of Muslims and doctrines of Islam is total hate for the unbeliever and literal commands to committ genocide on the unbeliever (Jihad).

After every seemingly 'violent' verse theres a verse that says or indicates that it talks about times of war, and even then, if the enemy relents, not to fight them and make peace with them.
"Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice."
[Qur'an 60:8]
So much for Angeltress's "NOTHING"

READ THIS!!!
What Does Islam Say about Terrorism?
TIslam, a religion of mercy, does not permit terrorism. In the Quran, God has said:
Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion nor drove you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.
Surah (Chapter) Al-Mumtahanah (The Woman to be examined) Qur-an 60:8
The Prophet Muhammad ( may Allah exalt him and grant him peace ) used to prohibit soldiers from killing women and children,1 and he would advise them: {...Do not betray, do not be excessive, do not kill a newborn child.}2 And he also said: {Whoever has killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance is found for a span of forty years.}3
Also, the Prophet Muhammad ( may Allah exalt him and grant him peace ) has forbidden punishment with fire.4
He once listed murder as the second of the major sins,5 and he even warned that on the Day of Judgment, {The first cases to be adjudicated between people on the Day of Judgment will be those of bloodshed.6}7
Muslims are even encouraged to be kind to animals and are forbidden to hurt them. Once the Prophet Muhammad ( may Allah exalt him and grant him peace ) said: {A woman was punished because she imprisoned a cat until it died. On account of this, she was doomed to Hell. While she imprisoned it, she did not give the cat food or drink, nor did she free it to eat the insects of the earth.}8
He also said that a man gave a very thirsty dog a drink, so God forgave his sins for this action. The Prophet ( may Allah exalt him and grant him peace ) was asked, "Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?" He said: {There is a reward for kindness to every living animal or human.}9
Additionally, while taking the life of an animal for food, Muslims are commanded to do so in a manner that causes the least amount of fright and suffering possible. The Prophet Muhammad ( may Allah exalt him and grant him peace ) said: {When you slaughter an animal, do so in the best way. One should sharpen his knife to reduce the suffering of the animal.}10
In light of these and other Islamic texts, the act of inciting terror in the hearts of defenseless civilians, the wholesale destruction of buildings and properties, the bombing and maiming of innocent men, women, and children are all forbidden and detestable acts according to Islam and the Muslims. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness, and the vast majority have nothing to do with the violent events some have associated with Muslims. If an individual Muslim were to commit an act of terrorism, this person would be guilty of violating the laws of Islam.
...All praises be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad, His last Messenger...
