The SR-71 is a reconnaissance aircraft.
The MiG-25 and the YF-12 are/were interceptors. There are some big differences between an Interceptor and a Fighter.

The USAF F-15 Eagle with Mach 2.5 speed would be the fastest Fighter in service. Raptor's disclosed top speed is Mach 2.42. Eagle rules...

If "fighter" implied air combat, then the MiG-25 is the fastest combat aircraft, it was made by Russia.

Sci, you need to check your data: The Phantom can never beat the Eagle in speed (or anything else). Besides the Phantom was a Fighter-Bomber, not an Interceptor.

F-4 Max Speed: Mach 2.23
F-15 Max Mach 2.5

The fastest speed of the English Electric Lightning is still Top Secret. It was zipping round at incredible speeds in the 1950's. There are substantial rumours/ apparent witness accounts that it broke the sound barrier ib a dead vertical climb, in about 1963.
It could also supercruise before the Americans and Russians even knew what it was.
The Eurofighter Typhoon's top speed is also a Secret.
The Fighter version of the Tornado was also faster than most of the aircraft mentioned above.
By default, apart from Recce Aircraft, which intentionally fly over restricted zones, the interceptors are going to be the fastest - the clue is in the title. "Fighters" need manouverability more than dash.

the fastest fighter, and that includes interceptors as well, is the mig 25 foxbat at mach 3.2. the fastest US fighter is the F15 eagle at mach 2.8 the next fastest US fighter is the F14 tomcat at mach 2.5. the F4 phantom made mach 2.3 in its day, but that makes it third fastest. the F4 however is faster that the F16 fighting falcon and the F/A 18 hornet, as both of those planes have a top speed of mach 1.9. in a dogfight though with equal pilots, the F4 comes up well short, even the later versions with the 20mm cannons installed. the mig 31 is slower than the mig 25 as the mig 31 will top out at about mach 2.9. now if you are talking about all aircraft, but not including the space shuttle, the SR71 is second place in the speed race, as the X15 would run rings around it with a top speed of mach 6.7.

SR= Strategic Reconnassance- nope, just the fastest airbreather.

MIG-25, Russia(USSR) clocked in excess of Mach 3 over Israel in the 1973 war.

Stealth fighters just don't go that fast Raptor/Lightning, they do other things well.

The F-4 was an interceptor but to exclude it and the MIG-25 from fighter claim is simply foolish. The F-4 was faster than all the new F-15/16/18/14 aircraft too! F= Fighter, A= Attack, B= Bomber

The YF-12 was the fighter version of the SR-71 and it carried the early version of the Phoenix missiles but it never went into production.

The fastest production fighter aircraft was the Soviet Mig-25 which was designed to stop the American XB-70 bomber.

U.S. Navy FA-37 Talon at Mach 5, Flew alongside E.D.I. and shot down Russian Su-37 Terminators........ I believed F-14 Tomcat is the fastest in lower altitudes between Mach 1.2 and 1.4 with full weapons loadout. When i say lower altitudes i mean below 15000 ft to sea level. F-15 eagle cannot top that coz Eagle is high altitude fighter

The fastest currently flying fighter jet is the Mig 31. It was designed to counter the XB70.
It will fly at Mach 3 at the edge of space, its only slightly slower then the SR71.
Its Russian by the way.
